Been tracking my calories for the last month, and I decided to make myself some delicious pancakes with some fresh strawberries. That used up a third of the calories I have budgeted for today.

Worth it.

Unrelated, I've been watching a bunch of random cooking shows recently, and have decided that clearly I don't use nearly enough butter in my life. Why does every recipe suggest like a pound of butter.

High calorie food will always taste good though, because humans evolved to basically be starving and foraging/hunted most of the time

I actually eat really healthy most of the time. Including chicken literally every day, often multiple times (I'll be having chicken for both lunch and supper).

The calorie counting actually revealed something interesting. I don't eat enough calories. I was averaging about 1800, but I go to the gym about 4-5 days a week, so those days I really should be closer to 2500 (I'm not trying to lose weight).

Pretty much. We evolved to be attracted to stuff that would give us more calories, because it was the best way to avoid starving (this actually explains our affinity for alcohol, too, since fermenting fruits have a lot of simpler sugars that provide quick, easy energy), but then we developed past that point but haven't evolved out of those tastes because there's been no reason to. So cuisine has developed based on those tastes and we're left to intellectually decide how to fill our nutritional needs, rather than relying on tastes or instincts.

Basically, I need to eat more, but I'd rather it not come from things full of sugar, fat, and butter. As delicious as those things are.

So basically I added more snacks, but didn't really change my overall diet too much.

You could always start substituting nut flours for part of the wheat flour you use. That can take some finagling and isn't always an option (since wheat flour tends to be included in recipes because it has physical properties that other flours don't), but something like almond flour has significantly more calories than wheat flour (600/cup, compared to 364), and those calories are pretty well balanced between fats, proteins, and carbs.

Food is healthy, too much food is not healthy.

It is true that some proccessed foods etc are probably bad for you especially if you don't eat them in moderation, but...they are not exactly real foods at that point.

There are TONS of healthy, yummy foods you can eat that are not bad for you in moderation, just make them with real ingrediants and you should be fine.

Outside of making pancakes once every two weeks, I rarely use flour. Frankly, most of my meals are pretty boring, but I like them.

For example, my lunch today was a chicken breast burger on a thin bun with sides of kiwi and carrots.

Supper tonight will be leftover roast chicken with sides of rice (probably just white rice), carrots, and a cucumber. This is my go-to supper probably 4-5 times a week <_< (except chicken breast or salmon usually instead of roast chicken)

Healthy food is more than just cucumbers apples or bananas are good for you and they both taste good. I enjoy nuts and most nuts are quite good for you, yes they aren't as amazing as say potato chips or some other salty or sweet snack but they aren't like eating plain oatmeal.

Well the problem is that what is "healthy food" is debatable now days. Joe Rogan is touting the high fat high protein diet, but then there are still experts out there saying high fat diets are bad. It seems the only thing people can really agree on is that sugar is bad.

Wouldn't it be ok to add a cheat food to your diet. I'm not sure what kind of diet you are going for, so I'm not sure what foods would be ok. But I'm sure a little something that's not the healthiest is ok if it helps you reach the healthy amount of calories. Or a good tasting food that's not the healthiest once in a while wouldn't hurt. You could also eat more. Or take a good tasting for and make it yourself to make it a little healthier. I saw that you said you added more snacks. But will that add enough calories. I feel like the snack wouldn't solve the complete problem. And depending on the snacks, I feel the healthier ones probably wouldn't add all the calories you need still. But, then again, I do think that have those certain snacks made to get calories, so maybe... Idk...

Maybe science should study my body. There is no way I should be alive the way I eat and drink... And still apparently healthy according to PT test and my yearly physicals... I'm guessing they're not seeing the unhealthy stuff or something...

Absolutely. Life isn't worth living if you aren't having the food you like. Moderation is key. Like the whole topic is about, despite pancakes being awful for you (no matter how many strawberries I put on top of it), I still made them because pancakes are delicious. If I want a muffin for breakfast, I will darn well have a muffin for breakfast. But I keep track of everything to make sure I'm not going overboard. Maybe I don't need to have pancakes for breakfast, McDonald's for lunch, and then have a massive deep fried meal for dinner.

Also, outside of protein shakes, I don't really drink calories. I like the trend of more and more calorie free drinks being available these days. Gone are the dark ages where it was water or nothing.

So far, yes. Mostly, canned meat (either tuna or chicken salad) and crackers. It's an easy and delicious relatively healthy snack option that adds a few hundred calories. Do that two or three times in a day and that can be 600+ calories.
