I don't care about Fortnite, but I understand it's popularity. If it had come out when I was in high school I probably would have been obsessed with it as well. It is basically the Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 Arena of 2017 (Doubly so since it is made by Epic games who also made Unreal Tournament).

Fortnite is a lot of fun and the fact that its 100% free is great. Its not the best game ever but its constantly being updated with new stuff and it gets better all the time.

I dunno, it's like Minecraft to me now. Loved by kids, every other gaming YouTube channel is devoted to it. I like Minecraft but I can still appreciate why people make fun of it.

Anyways I've played Fortnite a little, it's okay but I never really felt like devoting enough time to fully understand the strategy. It's so variable, I can do basically the same things and finish 85th or 20th depending on if I'm lucky enough to not run into many people

Fortnite has the production value and budget of a lot of AAA games. They give the battle royale away for free in hopes that people will buy the cosmetics (spoiler: they do) which in turn funds the game and all the tournaments they do. Idk why you think free means its automatically bad. Its extremely well polished.

I got it for my kids recently on PS4 and Switch, they want to play with friends but we couldn't figure out how to set it up for them because it allowed them to become friends but it is always showing they are offline even though they are clearly playing online just not with each other.

I dont think the crossplay between consoles is working with PS4 yet. They just announced they were doing it a couple weeks ago.

That would make sense. I read articles from late September that said they were starting crossplay at the time of the article. I guess for now my kids will need to take turns on the switch when they want to play with their friends.

You say this, but the game did release as a soulless Early Access F2P Zombie defense game and only after did that fail they all but aborted it for months while they made the Battle Royale mode that everybody plays. I doubt most people know there's another gamemode.

Have you played the game at all? The map is changing literally every week. I feel like its bad because it only has one map is a complaint that people who have watched someone play the game for 5 minutes and doesnt really know how it works makes.

Well, at least DA:I on nightmare is actually fun to me. Fortnite isn't. The cycle of land, find weapons, build, kill or be killed, wash and repeat as needed, isn't fun, quite boring actually.

As for me, I think it's nice that gaming is gaining more attention via these online games like that, but they're not my thing. I'm a single player/split screen gamer, so there's nothing to hate on. It would be like hating on Tv series when I don't even watch those. They have 0 effect on my life so whatever.

Btw, Zombie games aren't fun imho. They never were.

Actually, I don't think it's the game's fault. These people gotta have some problems, just like those who got too much into MMORPGs or any other game ever. There's a line that shouldn't be crossed when gaming.

Imagine if Nintendo wasn't run by decrepid Japanese men with no understanding of the market outside of Japan and they released a free Pokemon game for PC, a Pokemon MMO if you would.

There are plenty of examples of quality games that use F2P models. Path of Exile, Warframe, Fortnite, DotA 2, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2... most mobile games suck not because of the F2P model, but because they're lazy, cynical cash grabs from studios that care more about milking whales than making a decent game. The F2P model is certainly open to wanton exploitation that ruins the game it's attached to, but that doesn't mean every developer chooses to stoop to that level.

Publishers are always going to chase the current flavour of the month. That's nothing specific to Fortnite, nor even anything you can blame Fortnite for. All Fortnite (and PUBG, albeit to a lesser extent now) did was succeed, which is always going to mean less creative studios want to chase after a piece of that pie.

When I was growing up we had quality video games that weren't a fucking money pit.
