The problem with Striker is while I agree he's not a bad commentator 95% of the time, it's not 95% of shows he's not bad. It's 95% of time. So he's going to have a cringey line every few minutes.

But I can still see someone liking him as making more sense than Cole being above average

So word is a lot of the women went from being really excited about the Evolution PPV to not very excited about it during to the lack of matches and then focusing on building up the Crown Jewel during their go home shows this week.

Did she actually say BLACKFACE was ok? Like painting yourself black and giving yourself comically enlarged lips and noses and such to make fun of a race?

Or did she say it was ok to make yourself look African American (pretty much just face paint)?

She said it was okay in her mind to paint your face to look like a black person for the purpose of Halloween costumes

I'm black and I think outrage over blackface is stupid. If you're doing an Al Jolson routine it's one thing. But to me stuff like when Julianne Hough wore black facepaint to portray a black character from OITNB is no different than wearing green facepaint to be a Martian.

I tend to agree it's not the same kind of mind that blackface comes from.

The major issue with it is the mindset that thinks the skin color is important to the detail of a Halloween costume when it really shouldn't be one that warrants going through the trouble of painting. That's going to be an issue if you paint the skin any color. It's a sign of some underlying racism or potential racism that should be corrected by saying "why do you need to do that?", but keep in mind it's probably not racism in a malicious way given the kid is wanting to dress as a black character anyway. To me it would be no different than, I dunno, a group of kids dressing up as the Ghostbusters, one being black, and that one being strong armed into being Winston even if his favorite character is Ray. I doubt people would be nearly as upset about that.

It's the kinda thing I'd only find offensive if the person defended it super hard when presented with reasons why that shouldn't be the case. I think boycotting the show is an overreaction. But it's probably just WWE feigning being upset for social justice points anyway.

I still think it's dumb. Say a white kid wanted to be Mr. T for Halloween. Is it less racist to wear a Mr. T mask than to wear black facepaint? You're still pretending to be black when you're not.

Skin color can be important to the costume. Like if you're the Wicked Witch you want to be painted green or else who even knows what you are?

Well for me I think the issue is the perception that painting your skin is really important to selling the costume. With a mask you're not putting effort in so who cares.

I would say the wicked witch's skin being green is more important to her character than Mr T's skin being black. "Has green skin" is one of her defining features vs other witches.

Like I said I don't think it's racist in a way that warrants any sort of outrage but were I a parent of a kid who wanted to dress as a black dude I'd say "just copy his costume I don't want to paint your face kid it's not that important-- people will know who you are supposed to be either way"

It's a murky arena, honestly. There are cultural connotations to blackface which make it inappropriate. The same with yellow face. I don't think there would be cultural connotations to painting yourself orange in order to be Donald Trump or painting yourself green to be the Hulk.

I would be offended by the Al Jolson thing if they weren't portraying a character and were just doing an over the top stereotypical black guy thing. But then again I thought RDJ in Tropic Thunder was hilarious, so I guess it would have to mean spirited to really get me.

Like scarlet said, it is specifically different BECAUSE of its cultural history.

Like sure, in a vacuum theres not really a difference between a mask and facepaint, but nothing we do as members of a shared history of dehumanization is ever truly in a vacuum

Agreed. I think there could be an argument for it if you ACKNOWLEDGE the baggage it carries but think that the baggage can be shed.

But if your argument (like Kellys) hinges on I dont get what the big deal is? then it shows that youre too ignorant about it to make a salient point.
