The only leads in contention for "best" in the FF series are Cloud, Zidane, and Terra/Lightning (who are both more vocal points in an ensemble cast than outright leads).

Tidus is simply phenomenal though. They went in a totally different route with a hero, taking a big risk. And it paid off on so many levels.

Tidus is wonderful. In a time where RPG leads were either stoic badasses or cheerful heroes, Tidus actually broke the mold and did something totally different and it allows him to grow so much through the course of the narrative and his relationships with the other characters.

I understand not liking his design maybe, but how he's written is phenomenal.

Tidus is a professional athlete who gets plucked out of his life and thrown into a rough situation. Fine, I'm okay with that. It's the same reason I enjoy Hope in FF13. My problem is that Tidus is still an overbearing douchebag. He stumbles across a religious ceremony, and barges in to fuck around because he thinks Yuna is hot. And then he spends a large portion of the rest of the game douching around in this world without making any real effort to learn anything about the culture he's invading. Yet he's forced upon us as the main character of the game, and that douchey arrogance makes it so that when he becomes a whiny little bitch later on, it's more annoying than tolerable in terms of character development.

Also, the Tidus/Yuna romance sucks and has no chemistry.

Well, really this speaks to the gravity Yuna has and her ability to inspire others, but that's another topic.

If I was pulled out of everything I've ever known into an entirely new world, I would hang back and try to get a feel for the place. I wouldn't shove my way to the forefront of anything, and I certainly wouldn't barge into a place of worship against the desires of the land's inhabitants, all because some priestess girl (I know she's a summoner, but I'm talking about from an outsider's perspective) looks hot.

He barged in because they said it was dangerous and the summoner could be injured or die and it was bizarre to him that nobody considered doing anything to help. I dont see how thats a bad quality. Sure he didnt know any of their customs, but youre accusing him of having common human courtesy here

I think this a less a symptom of Tidus declining (he already did that) and more of a factor of DK getting two beloved games AND Nintendo being on the upswing due to the switch

Agreed. Having recently platinumed FFX, I thought Tidus was a fun and unusual character and rooted for his haphazard heros journey in the context of that crazy universe. Theres a place for critical analysis, but FFX wasnt it for me.
