I'm sure others probably covered this by now, but he doesn't even know what she looks like by that point, let alone does it because "she looks hot." He does it because everybody keeps going "This is dangerous and they could die!" and he's like "...Then why the hell aren't you helping them?" and it baffles him that they're going to let somebody die just for some religious thing

That's common human decency, not "because she looks hot"

It sounds like you got hung up on him being "some sports douche" and didn't really pay attention to any of his growth
