Board 8 > haha wow just had my first 'wrong number' in a really long time

some random person just called my phone, having dialed the wrong number. I can't even remember the last time this happened. it was pretty funny too. I'll provide a brief transcript here.

(I answer the phone)
(silence)
me: hello?
(silence)
(I hear noise on the other end but it's hard to make out exactly what he said, if anything)
me: who is this?
guy: who is this?
me: ...
(I laugh slightly at how absurd that response is)
me: what?
me: I'm [name]. who is asking?
guy: is this [phone number]
me: ...
(once again I'm just in disbelief at how rude this person is to call someone else's number, demand to know who they are, and start badgering them)
me: I think you have the wrong number
guy: is this [phone number] (more insistent)
me: that's my number but I think you have the wrong number
guy: I'm trying to get in touch with my mother
me: that's my number, but I can promise you I'm not your mother
guy: I DIDN'T THINK YOU WERE MY MOTHER, DUMBASS
(guy immediately hangs up)

apparently I'm a dumbass because he dialed the wrong number

honestly this was the best part

I'm not even kidding when I say that I involuntarily laughed out loud immediately after he asked me

I was just 'haha... what?'

you would think he would figure out he had the wrong number a bit sooner when a guy answered the phone! also dude sounds pretty hostile. I've had some 10/10 convos with wrong numbers in my time.

random aside: why are people afraid to even say their first names online? like...I'm Chris. I wouldn't be afraid to reveal that my name is Chris if I was relaying this story!

I'm not afraid, I just don't really like my name so I often won't use it unless I have to

also it helps to keep different parts of my life compartmentalized. my board 8 version of myself is a totally separate creature from my version of myself around the house, which is different from me at work, etc.

I have to assume he dialed the wrong area code since the 7 digit number he gave was definitely mine. the only other explanation is maybe he wrote down the number wrong and so his mother's real number is something close to mine but he messed it up when he first heard it.

or, like you said, maybe his mom gave him a fake number

okay see I have gotten wrong texts a little bit more recently and those have been fairly amusing, too. when I first got this phone number it actually wasn't too long before I received the first one.

it was from guy who worked at a gym and he was texting this woman that had apparently gone there recently for a tour or to look into joining a fitness program or something. I assumed he was some guy who was trying to get her to sign up for the program.

I figured if I ignored it, he wouldn't text again. little did I know this would start a scenario where he tried to text this woman to get in touch with her several times over the next few weeks and it was clearly not just in a professional capacity. this was clearly just some random guy who had met her at the gym and was trying to find a way to meet up with her again without really being very direct about it.

at a certain point it became really sad how desperate he was and the fact that he wasn't even sending his messages to the person he was trying to reach. at the same time I felt like too much time had gone by and it'd be awkward for me to suddenly respond like 'hey this is the wrong number' since then it would be obvious that some stranger had been reading the messages he intended to send someone else in private.

he did stop texting eventually so I guess he realized he had been given a wrong number.
