it.

Even setting aside whether or not he sexually assaulted anyone, his testimony makes him look like a slightly crazy jackass. And of course the republicans defend him, because they value the party about all else.

Except they couldn't simply because it was never about an "investigation," it's always just been a stall tactic to delay the nomination long enough for the senate to shift enough in the Dems' favor so they can block any Republican nomination for the next two to six years.

People who were already inclined to bash him are going to continue to do so, people who were already inclined to defend him are going to continue to do so, and both sides are going to continue to assume that everyone on the other side is an idiot or an asshole.

This is pretty much the default state of American politics now.

Clearly not.

None of the allegations have anything to do with his performance as judge.

People who commit sexual assault should not be supreme court justices. That seems very relevant to his performance as a judge to me.

And that's ignoring the perjury, partisanship, and behavior.

The witnesses that were named refused to corroborator the allegations.

In what sense?

Someone else has claimed responsibility for the assault.

And how credible is he?

I think it has been the default state of American politics for the last 20 years at least, maybe more. The only difference now is that access to information about it is so readily available that no matter what you believe there will always be a news "source" to back you up. It has gotten to the point that I respect the people who don't vote more then the ones who do because I know at least they have more interesting things to do with their lives then worry about a bunch of politicians jacking each other off in D.C.

Gasp. I'm so shocked. There's stalling tactics in politics? O golly gee i wonder if this has ever happened before the trump administration.

Obvioulsy there's a stalling component to this. That does not mean that the Democrats don't take these thing seriously. They already forced their own to resign over sexual harassment claims long before this Kavanaugh thing. I don't really see why the two ideas are mutually exclusive. Its about BOTH stalling and an investigation.

The republicans made a piss poor choice in their approach of this situation. They thought that because they were the majority party they could just ignore the whole thing and push Kavanaugh through without it blowing up in their faces. They failed to realize that with the current political environment their best approach would have been to allow an investigation without all the drama.

To be fair, I'd imagine most people would look like a slightly crazy jackass if they were forced to convince the entire world on live television that they aren't a gang rapist.

They didn't "force" anything and many of the resignees' greatest defenders were their colleagues. And keep in mind THOSE incidents were both more recent and with actual, verifiable evidence (especially since Al Franken took a photo of himself doing it). And long before this Kavanaugh thing, not only did they not force a sex offender to resign, but they elected him president. And then when that president had a completely inappropriate #MeToo moment with an intern, they defended him despite massively abusing his office and lying under oath.

chaosbowser posted...

If you mean both stalling and desperately trying to find anything to derail his nomination, duh. If you mean investigating this claims because they seriously think something happened, obviously not. They'd back *any* claim to push their agenda.

I dont expect anyone to be a superhuman. Only a robot wouldnt be noticeably uncomfortable in such a situation. And by "just about anyone"... I really mean everyone minus some kind of unfeeling psychopath. And yes, I think a judge should be an actual human being. I would find it more strange if someone showed no emotion in his shoes. Do you honestly care about how every member on the Supreme Court behaved when they were in high school?

Like right now. The current Supreme Court. Do you care who they were or how they acted in high school? Do you even KNOW any members of the Supreme Court without needing to Google it?

Do you think they should be allowed on the Supreme Court if they got a speeding ticket? What if they cheated on their spouse? What if they never donated to charity in their entire life? What if they like to buy lottery tickets every week? What if they smoke weed from time to time in a state where smoking weed is legal?

When the fuck did America turn into such a pussified nation that is obsessed with moral superiority???

I swear, that's all the internet is now. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram...99% of message boards. Just a cesspool of people pretending to be outraged by stuff. Enough with the act. I'm not buying it.

I know for a fact that if we hung out in person, in the real, physical world.....we'd be joking about all kinds of inappropriate shit. Doesn't make us bad people. Just makes us human.

I must be in the minority here, but I'd want people on the Supreme Court who are qualified for the job. And also human. Imperfect. Maybe made some mistakes in their youth. Learned from them. Grew from them. Became different people. Better people.

When you are in your 50's, do you want some idiots judging you for how you behaved when you were a teenager??? That's messed up.

Stop virtue-signalling.

tbh both sides look kind of shitty on this (and I hate the whole "both sides" thing)

Democrats look stupid because they're starting up such a fuss about basically nothing

Republicans look stupid because they're going on a fucking crusade about basically nothing

Both sides are over reacting to what is mostly a non issue that's going to result in a fundamentalist Republican judge on the court (regardless of what happens to Kavanaugh).

Realistically either the Democrats should drop the allegations or the Republicans should drop Kavanaugh, and the whole thing should end. But that would be perceived as weakness so neither side wants to do it, which results in this becoming a fucking shitshow.

Of course as a non-American I'm biased in that I don't really care about the US supreme court as far as US politics go.
