Oh yeah, Kokichi.

To start with, in order to get a base understanding here, the thing to realize is that the one who voted for Kokichi in 3-4 was Kokichi himself, not Kaito.

The translation for the flashback at the end of trial 5 to Kokichi and Kaito's conversation in the hanger has Kokichi saying he doesn't find the game fun and never has. This is a gross mistranslation of the scene that was likely done on purpose for how the localizers were trying to present the character. What Kokichi is actually saying is that he he has always hated killing and death. NOBODY hates the killing game more than Kokichi, EVERYTHING that happened was tearing him up inside, but he'd determined that the actions he was taking and the way he was presenting himself was the most reliable way he could see to end the game with the least deaths possible.

He sacrificed Gonta knowing that it was the only way to get himself into a position to end the game, but he despised himself for it. That's why he voted for himself and his initial emotional response to Gonta's death was his real one. Hell, every be emotional response to every death were his true feelings.

By the end, he was more than willing to end his own life to save the rest of the survivors, almost certainly with a factor of survival's guilt for failing to find a way to stop it all earlier.

Case 5 is the best V3 case and a Top 5, perhaps even Top 3, series case. Kokichi is pretty good but is definitely a poor man's Nagito. Case 6 is good but I do think they spend more time trying to drive in the point than they needed to. The "audience comments" that appear in the background are ****ing gold though.

Cases: 5 >> 6 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 3

Characters: Not gonna do a full ranking but Maki, Kaito, and Kokichi were probably the best.

DR2 >> V3 >> DR1

I can see someone not liking it because it goes overboard on its point. It's not the first/only one to make that kind of point but it is the most blatant/in-your-face-about-it one I've seen.

Like, as fourth wall breaks go, I'd actually consider it one of the weaker ones I've seen in video games in terms of execution. Unfortunately, it's hard to talk about because bringing up counter-examples is usually by default spoilers for those other examples.

I'm cool with the ending though. I suppose it wouldn't really be Danganronpa if it weren't over-the-top.

After sitting on it, I realize I might've been unfair in judging the finale. I was so taken aback by the direction everything went after outing the mastermind, that I was just trying to get through text as quickly as possible.

That being the case, why did that still take FOUR HOURS? That was maybe 2 hours worth of information, and I'm being super generous. I didn't feel like DR2's finale drug on, even though it took almost as long, because that game had an absurd amount of twists to throw at you, and new information to impart on you.

They had to:
-Establish that Jabberwock Island was virtual, and clarify what that means in the grand scheme of things.
-Explain who the characters are and why they were there.
-Reveal Monokuma's true identity.
-Bring in the first game's cast so there would be a two-sided battle.
-Actually have the discussion on what proper outcomes are.
-Finish everything off satisfactorily.

This game spent an hour hyping up the mastermind, another half hour digging into their motivation for stuff...... and then two and a half hours driving in the fact that they're fictional characters? The pacing for the second half of that trial was just god-awful.

However. After everything is said and done, I actually kinda like the final twist. As with tons of stuff this series does, the execution of the twist was way off, but as an idea, I really like it. That reeeeeally didn't need 4 hours of expository bullshit. You can tell from my contributions to this topic for the second half of the trial, but I enjoyed reading the side messages from the audience way more than what was actually happening in the game. And that's not good.

I was heading into that 6th chapter with a somewhat tough decision choosing between DR2 and DRv3 as the best in the series, and now I'm trying to decide whether DR1 or DRv3 goes last. I think the answer is still DR1, but the fact that I had to think about it a little speaks volumes.

DRV3 is ultimately my favorite game in the series by a mile because I just really like its cast and its setting a great deal more overall, and I like the weird metatwist at the end whereas in DR2 it fell flat for me, and I just felt more entertained by the mysteries in general. But there are a few major rewrites I would do to really make DRV3 shine and I feel like making a post about it at some point

I actually like most of the characters. I felt bad I couldn't put Gonta higher than 9th. I like Gonta. Only Tenko and Kiyo really drew my ire, and even then, Tenko redeemed herself a little and Kiyo could have been done well, but wasn't.

I dunno how to rank the chapters really. The first six on that list - 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-1, 3-4, and 3-5 are the ones I really, really like and think are done well. Everything else after that has problems, although I don't fully HATE any of them except 2-6, which I find utterly miserable.
