There are probably ~500 playable FE characters. It might beat Pokemon if you count each evolutionary line as one "character".

That said, a decent chunk of those FE guys are generic as hell.

There are 439 fully evolved Pokemon if you count Pokemon with the same National Dex number as being the same Pokemon. There are a little under 800 character portraits on the Fire Emblem CYL website but this double counts characters that show up in 2 games and includes most NPCs that have a unique portrait.

If they add a Fire Emblem Axe user, it will be Hector. Intelligent Systems has really been pushing Hector lately.

I guess Hector could be an echo of Ike, but sadly I think Black Knight is more likely if they go that route. Lyn is the most popular lord from that game and she's still an AT.

Fire Emblem is a lot more than just sword users, we have axes, lances, bows, magic, knives, people who turn into animals...

Fire Emblem has the biggest pot of different types of gameplay and characters you could bring to smash, and all the people who made it in are personalityless sword users (although the awakening crew are not completely dishwater bland like the others)

Main characters in games tend to use swords. It's just how it is. In the first Fire Emblem popularity poll, the Top 4 winners were all sword users who were main characters.

It's still weird to me that people complained about too many sword users in Smash and then kept asking for Ganondorf to use his sword.

again, that would still probably go to Pokemon

massive variety of types, designs, etc. I'm not even saying it as a Pokemon fanboy (haven't played a mainline game since Ruby I think) but the amount of options they are pretty overwhelming

SSB: Pikachu (Electric), Jigglypuff (Fairy, though Normal when it was introduced)
SSBM: Pichu (Electric), Mewtwo (Psychic)
SSBB: Squirtle (Water), Ivysaur (Grass/Poison), Charizard (Fire/Flying), Lucario (Steel/Fighting)
SSB4: Greninja (Water)
And really, Ivysaur just represents grass and not poison and Lucario fighting and not steel. I think we'd all like to see some crazy pokemon options like Oricorio or something wacky.

I don't want to see any crazy Pokemon options unless people really like that Pokemon to begin with. Smash is a fanservice game at heart and I'm much more concerned with getting in everyone favorite characters than I am with looking for new wacky gameplay styles to introduce.

People like lots of wacky pokemon. I'd also rather have an unexpected option than another really predictable one. I really like WFT as a bizarro choice even though I hate her in-game.

Bizarro choices are overrated. Retroactively remove WFT and replace her with a character people actually care about and/or will play. Predictable is good if it's what people want.

I'm in favor of having mostly choices that people want, but I also like the occasional bizarro option. The predictable pokemon choices this gen (Decidueye and Incineroar) are boring, so I'd rather have something weird. The only predictable pokemon choice that'd be interesting is Tapu Koko.

Admittedly, Incineroar could have a neat grappling moveset, so it wouldn't be all bad.

Jigglypuff is still Normal type in addition to Fairy. Clefairy was the one that got changed to pure Fairy. Still wish they gave Jigglypuff Moonblast for her final smash rather than keeping that stupid inflation move that doesn't do anything. Also Greninja is Water/Dark.

I dunno. With Isabelle being her own character it seems to hint at her getting an echo, and nook's trailer is literally him watchin Isabelle. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was someone who was scrapped for time really late in the game.

Chrom and Dark Samus got a little spot to themselves. Daisy didn't even get splash art. But Robin's trailer was equally Lucina's.

The echos also only ever get the generic "___ joins the battle!" message if they get a splash art. When I saw Isabelle had a unique one, I figured that meant she wasn't an echo.
