My theory is that due to the decline of journalism as a profession, less people with ability become journalists now. As a result, the media gets dumbed down and someone like Trump easily runs circles around them, where they simply cannot help but give him free publicity that helps him.

I think they're doing fine as a business - or rather, the ones that have embraced the media as entertainment model, led by Fox News, have. But journalists still like to talk about themselves as more than entertainers, and that's where they are losing. Or maybe it's intentional, as you say - it seems to be what the market wants.
