I think Watch Dogs has made people lose their minds or something. Like the downgrade for that game was evident as soon as they showed off gameplay. People also forget that Watch Dogs was revealed before the PS4 was even announced. The hardware wasn't locked down yet. It's different this far into the generation.

YouTube quality videos always make games look worse and visuals can be significantly impacted by lighting.

But yet this won't be the last time we see this style of controversy.

And people wonder why CDProjektRED was hesitant to show Cyberpunk 2077.

It's not so much about the downgrades themselves it's the dishonest marketing that continues to plague games. Just be honest about what you're game will look like and play like.

Consoles can't handle the high quality ray tracing. E3 trailers look better because they've taken days to render. Consoles have to do it in real time.

Spiderman is very obviously downgraded. There's a thing where he flips off a building in a slow mo shot. In the bullshot the lighting was better, there was vapor effect from a pipe next to Spidey, there were a bunch of cars in motion, and a lot of trees. In the actual game the lighting is much blander, the particle effect cut out, no cars on the street, and less item density by a lot.

It's crazy to me that people readily excuse this kind of thing. Just because the game isn't totally unplayable from the downgrade doesn't mean it's fucked up for companies to lie about their products in promotional material. People get really excited about graphical fidelity and little advances in tech and such.

adjustments have to be made as the game gets closer to completion.

people have to remember that early trailers are literally tiny pieces of the game, usually broken off from the actual full project, made to run in its own little environment. the small, private environment isn't affected by things that hinder a full game production.

there are lots of things that can get in the way: the thousands of things that unlock in the early game that need to stick around toward the late game, network things that need to connect or be fed between servers, issues with certain textures/meshes/lighting pieces conflicting with other pieces, etc.

unless people really just want the tiny little world that the trailer is in (no one does, not even for a demo), it's never going to completely reflect the final product. it's kinda ridiculous to expect anything else.

the only TRUE problem is that these technical things aren't ever discussed or mentioned to the public, so the audience doesn't understand what's really going on; which makes sense, that's bad publicity. so instead they show something that's beautiful, and then give you a real full product that tries its best to meet those expectations while also giving you a billion more things that the trailer didn't hold but were promised.

Watch Dogs was a legit downgrade. It was immediately noticeable as soon as they showed gameplay. I mentioned this already.

Spider-man isn't. It's the same story as God of War and Detroit. People are doing 'spot the difference' with screenshots and misunderstanding why they look different.

All of them. Ray tracing generates images by tracing the paths of light, which makes them look very good. You can't do that in real time as you're constantly moving in the game.

All of them. Ray tracing generates images by tracing the paths of light, which makes them look very good. You can't do that in real time as you're constantly moving in the game.


Game trailers don't randomly add ray tracing to them. It's a new feature for the latest Nvidia graphics card. I'm guessing that's why this keeps getting brought up.

Ray Tracing is a meme at this point. In a year it may be commonplace but it'll be awhile before any real progress is made in that area (affordability being a huge factor).

There's a post with a lot of upvotes on the Reddit thread that says the E3 2018 demo looks better because it had ray tracing enabled.

That one is more likely since that trailer is a year older and a lot earlier. Reddit is focusing on the puddle in the E3 demo.

Even then the biggest downgrade is probably less traffic. I'm sure we've seen gameplay with the lighting on the left recently.

That's the point though. God of War and Detroit weren't downgraded and I'm not convinced Spider-man has been either. People are freaking out over a puddle and Spider-man doesn't look like he's wearing shiny latex anymore.

i doubt people would have had an issue with how the game looks if it was presented in its current form in trailers and at tradeshows

Things change as development goes on. Cyberpunk 2077 is going to look different when it releases. Some things might look worse but others could look better.

The point of this topic is that it's being assumed that's the case when it isn't. Neither God of War or Detroit got downgraded and it got the same controversy.

Ubisoft has always used tech demos that are vastly Superior to the finished product. Watch dogs, the division, assassin's Creed...I think For Honor might be the only game that didn't, but it was still plagued with a plethora of issues at launch

A lot of the games that actually did get downgraded severely were early in the generation. Watch Dogs, The Division, Dark Souls 2, Forza 5 etc.

As disappointing as it is it makes sense though. These games were guessing what next gen consoles would be using high end PC hardware. It was a transitional period. It's also why performance was also worse than it is now. It'll happen again next gen.

It is odd how these controversies in the last couple of years tend to be PS4 exclusives. I wonder if the PS4 streaming quality has anything to do with it.

I don't know why you guys are focusing so much on the missing puddle when there's tons of other downgrades related to lighting, shaders, dof, tesselation, and the textures on Spider-Man's suit.

The puddle is the most obvious change but deleting the puddle material isn't a graphics downgrade on its own any more than deleting a tree from Skyrim. The downgrade is the fact that everything else also looks worse.
