It's horrible if you don't like challenges I guess.

i liked infernal Berkut, Legion, Lyn, Lucina, and Marth

i did not like infernal Valter, Takumi or Grima

so i like some challenge but imo Takumi went too far.

Takumi's map is probably the best-designed GHB, yeah.

I'm of two minds when I see people complaining about the difficulty of FEH maps. On one hand, yeah it's lame that a lot of time the difficulty increase tends to be More Units + More Stats. With that said, I don't think I've ever once seen someone suggest how to make a more difficult 'fair' map, and I'm not sure a lot of the people complaining even want things that are more difficult period, 'fair' or otherwise. I see a lot of people get annoyed when their generic Dragon +10 team can't mindlessly crush a map.

The key to maps being difficult in a fun way is generally to use the space of the map well. Pace when, where, and how often the reinforcements come so that it doesn't become a game of "instantly kill all aggressors or get overwhelmed"

Being creative with stat spreads while going conservative on the reinforcements is the easiest way to attain it. Most of the well designed maps have annoying high durability harassment units that present a long term goal to deal with but don't require you to immediately kill them, along with a conservative amount of midrange offensive units where you can safely let one or two through but nothing beyond that. Takumi harasses you with high durability staff users-- I think Marth's was good too largely because of the huge armor unit that was only a real threat when Ignis went off, but was super durable.

It's not something that has an obvious solution that you can just flip a switch for but there are guidelines well designed maps follow that crappy maps don't.

Let's be real here even real Fire Emblem games have sketchy AI. It's just in the good ones the maps are designed in a way that you get the illusion of good AI due to it being difficult to funnel the AI into suicidal moves.

I disagree with Marth's being good. To me it was largely "reinforcement spam" and more often than not all 3 spawns were right next to each other so you instantly had a group of units to deal with.

I can't speak for Abyssal Marth because I had no interest in trying those but I thought Infernal Marth was fun. I think the only spawn that actually had 3 on you at once was the first one. Later ones they were streamed in a bit more gradually.

My only real problem with Infernal Marth is I felt a flying unit was mandatory because you didn't have enough squares to work with otherwise.

yeah i tend to use flying teams, that's why i could still have fun figuring out Marth's. i imagine it would not have been very fun with a non-flying team. same thing with Lyn.

(and yes only infernal. abyssal is well beyond what could possibly ever be fun to me and i'm basically ignoring it for the foreseeable future)

I did Lyn without any fliers but I also thought Lyn was very easy. The offense wasn't quite threatening enough to prevent the bridge choke from being easy mode.

Marth's was okay with only one flier. I used Serra Matthew Tharja Grima for it-- trying Soren instead of Grima for the first many tries, and eventually figured it out after bringing the single flier in.

Abyssal I could be interested in trying but only if I'm given some incentive to do so. I think accessories are dumb so you need to give me something a bit better for me to care. Alternate character arts would be awesome. Let me unlock a Sophia art that isn't garbage so I can build her.

Also I hope Cherche's refine is fantastic, because it would give me an excuse to +10 her. I don't really have a super built flier as of yet.

Cherche is great without a special weapon the only reason I haven't already merged her is she punts SPD and RES so she doesn't get as much out of merges as units that punt less stats do. That'll likely still be the case even after the weapon. She's still on my shortlist though.

If the Abyssal maps had too good of an incentive, people would be upset because of how impossible it would be for most people to get.

I didn't need to use flying units for any of the Abyssal maps. Did need a dancer though. I've seen one or two videos of people beating Abyssal with all infantry and no dancer and it looks like black magic.

so Lene was the obvious demote, but Ares demoted instead. Sylvia seems to be even worse than Lene but Quan also seems worse than Ares. Ares was also great fodder and Quan is pretty good, plus with the potential to increase arena score. tough to call.

i never liked Quan but i like drive atk so i wouldn't mind seeing him demote. Sylvia is probably my favorite refresher after Reyson and got great art so i wouldn't mind seeing her demote either. Lewyn's cool. seems to be similar to Ishtar but with less of a spd bonus and more of a CD bonus. i'm guessing he'll have more base spd and less atk than her to make up for those differences.

Valor skills are an extremely strange reason to not demote someone, but it is consistent I guess. Gray himself remains one of the weirdest 5*-locks.

FE4 again? More orb saving I suppose. Lewyn looks nifty for an infantry mage though. Reverse-HP Desperation and being able to spam specials should allow for some silly player phase sweeping if his stats are good. Not sure why they decided Quan needed a weapon which makes him functionally weak to fliers unless there's a reference I'm missing.

Takumi probably has the best GHB so far. As mentioned it's a nasty fight without just relying on stupid stats or ridiculous enemy density. It's also a really neat translation of the original game's version of the fight, something I'd like to see more of. Of course, it's also got a bit of an unfair advantage in that they literally designed a Prf weapon for the fight.

It is a reference to FE4. It's a fairly major spoiler, though. Quan is canoncally killed by flying units. As green units, Quan and Ethlyn, both mounted units, are forced into fighting Travant and a bunch of Wyvern Riders in a desert. It doesn't go well for them. Also, the area is sealed off from the player so it's like an on map cutscene. I believe you can technically save them but they still count as dead storywise.

Cherche gets an 11 MT Brave Axe with Panic Ploy 3 Refine
Odin gets 14 MT Blarblade that has normal skill cooldown with Atk/Spd Link 3 Refine

Honestly that might actually be good enough to make Odin good. Def/Res Link 3 on his B Slot would be hilarious in that he could +6 all stats to anyone who moved him from any movement support skill used by or on him.

I think I'm going for the +10 Odin.

Of course

Celica's Ragnarok now gives her Atk/Spd +5 at all times and also gives her Brazen Atk/Spd 3 as her special refine which is stupid good and makes it look like they were indeed too conservative with Odin's buffing considering her buff is probably better.

To put things in perspective, a Celica with Brazen Atk/Spd 3 in her A slot could have at < 80% hp

65 Atk
52 Spd

With a +3 to either attack or SPD. This is unmerged.

Who thought that was a good idea.

Great... i recently upgraded Cherches Brave Axe and should have waited. Might be interested in building Odin now, but i feel obligated to prioritize MRobin as he was the first unit i upgraded to 5* and hes very versatile and reliable. So glad i got Celica when i did as i now its much easier to decide her build. Mages generally want Desperation and new Celica is no different. Wish i had more Shannas

Its a bit tempting to give Celica double Brazen Atk/Spd so nothing stands in her way, but its probably just overkill. Will probably give her Fury and +3 Spd seal since shes -Spd. Shes DD fodder more than ever if you dont plan on using her since she wants to maximize on offense

Fae is a dime a dozen. I regret giving her QR3 as Myrrh is much better, even if shes unmerged. Maybe Fae will get an OP refine

Speaking of refinement, i realized most of the ones i used dew on are mages, and three of them were on red mages. Feels like refinement has done wonders for mages more than anyone else

Got a Grima on the new banner, although +Spd -HP IV's is going to require a creative build (still better than the -Atk on I foddered off). 27 base speed + Fury3 + Hone Armor/Dragons gets him to 36 though, plus Goad skills on the other 2 units gives offensive stats of 73/44. That's a fast Grima!

So has everyone else gone ahead and Combat Manual'd all their barracks, basically? This addition took me by surprise when it hit. I hadn't heard about anything like this happening and even afterward, I was just kinda waiting for someone else here to bring it up so I didn't look stupid. If I'm getting this right, the only heroes you don't want to turn into manuals are units you want to build, right? They can be SI'd, merged, and even bumped up stars, so there's absolutely no detriment to it unless you're going to use the unit....

If you are collecting 5* Lv40 conversations you also want to be careful who you turn into a Combat Manual. If it is a character who will pass down a 5* skill at some point and you don't have their 5* Lv40 conversation, you want to keep one real version of the character.

Merge levels, Blessing and SI are lost on the unit who is turned into a Combat Manual. So if you started building a unit but changed your mind, you still want to keep them as a real unit so you might be able to recover some of the SI you spend on the unit.
