In my experience, this is what sucks about it.

Having no one to guard your home while you're away.
Even having junk from thrift stores won't keep people from stealing everything.
Having a car with no garage to keep it in.
Can't walk anywhere, have to drive everywhere.
The streets are poorly maintained, with gaping pot holes and debris everywhere.
Have to live on the second floor of your home to avoid getting shot.
The local convenience stores keep getting shut down for selling drugs.
Can't have packages shipped to your house, even medication.
Can't get food delivered, always have to go out and pick it up.
Every other night, some front yard within an eighth of a mile is five squad cars deep.
Can't afford to move someplace decent because you can barely keep the lights, gas, water, and rent paid with your crap job.
The only job you could get turned out to be rsum poison, and now no other company will hire you, and tells you as such when you question them directly.

What I would do is have a heavy wooden dresser or bookshelf between the street and my bed and then let my spouse sleep between me and the dresser.

I have a blue 200c and I get semi nervous when I have to drive through the east side of town. 45 moves from my holster to my lap rq. Several times I've had "people" throw up signs or just straight up start yelling at me just because of the color of my car. I even recently almost had a situation when dropping off a passenger. Pull up to drop them off, three dudes sitting on a run down porch start getting loud and approached my car. Had to roll down the window and flash the cannon.

Worked for AT&T as manager for ten years, so I can't leave it off of my employment history. You can probably tell by my registration date here, that jogging down to the temp agency to get a job hefting boxes around ain't exactly going to work out.

Never mind the fact that until the city demolished most of itself, Youngstown was so well known as Murdertown USA, that people used to send letters to Youngstown by just putting Murdertown, Ohio, as the city, with no ZIP code. Every population center in the state has high violent crime rates. The political affiliation of the city councils and mayors tends to stay in one lane for decades, too. The oncoming traffic lane.

Don't forget the racial shaming too.

It can make you a target of gang violence, though. Depending on where you live and how much blue or red you wear. I live in California where it's probably more common.

For example, when I bought my red 49ers hat, they told me to be careful, but I wasn't planning on matching it up with red shoes and a red shirt. My old coworker's brother got shot for walking down the street while wearing something similar to that.

I lived in one until 2 years ago, where we moved 10 miles away to a college town.

Too bad all street gangs aren't treated like domestic terrorist organizations.
