Basically the guy said it was made out of old hamburgers

It probably always was

But that doesn't make it any less tasty until it was confirmed

It's true, I worked there in my teens. Maybe 16 years ago?

What would happen was the hamburgers that were a bit too overcooked to be served on a bun would be moved to a warming drawer, and then later cut up for a pot of chili. I think sometimes they were even moved to a cooler.

Not really that big of a deal since they get cooked in the chili again, so the meat is soft and not a health risk. I still ate the chili even after I knew about it.

it's made of hamburgers that are still good, but would be thrown out anyway because they are no longer good enough to be served on a burger . It's still safe to eat. You can request that the chili be made with fresh burgers if you are so concerned about being served old meat.

Well, if it wasn't safe you would have heard about it by now. It's not exactly going to fly under the radar if something that popular was making people sick.

And how does the fact of where it comes from change the flavor? If you liked the taste before, it's the same taste now, nothing has changed about it, so you will still like it. Just eat it if you want it.

Wow, that's almost 1:1 with what other people are saying. Maybe they changed their ways since then?

Is it true they just add hot water to old chili?

literally the point of chili and goulash and related dishes is to use up ingredients that are about to go bad and would otherwise be unappealing

Also this. It was created as a way to salvage food that would otherwise have been wasted. Tons of dishes we eat today were created for that very same reason. Just look at french toast. It was literally created as a way to make stale bread edible again instead of being thrown away. That's why anybody who's even remotely decent at making french toast will leave the bread out overnight to let it go a little stale for the morning. It actually tastes better when it's made the way it's intended to be made.

The problem isn't the meat being from old hamburgers (figured as much), problem is that apparently the burgers can be up to a week old before being used for the chili and that's eww

Unsure about this tbh. I seem to recall more water being added if the chili started to become too thick in the pot/pan where it's stored because then there's more potential for it to be burned to the bottom which is no good. But I don't remember ever storing chili overnight to use for the next day or whatever. Maybe less busy restaurants do, but we always made a fresh pot of it daily.

It was kind of sad haha. Like you would have a pot of water, and then all you did was pour in a bag of vegetables and a bag of chili seasoning along with the cut up hamburger and throw it on the stove for a few hours until it was ready to serve.

If this chili tastes worse than normal I'll swear off of it

If it's good I'll continue ordering like usual

TO WENDY'S

Yeah, by all means. If you consistenly get good chili don't worry about how it's made. It's 100% safe to eat.

But like, if you go to a Wendy's and their chili regularly tastes off (old, burnt, whatever) or they water it down.. maybe don't buy chili from them haha.

Can confirm also. When I worked there we got a new press grill. Takes like 90 seconds to cook up 8 singles. Then it's moved to a warming area that's on a timer. When that timer runs out, it's suppose to be moved to the chili drawer, but wasn't always. Also we totally left a pot chili in the fridge overnight. I have worse stories than that though <_<

Aren't you supposed to let chili sit for a long time before serving it? Because this is also the case for soup and pasta sauce

Does it taste good?

Has it made you sick?

I just quit at Wendy's. It's just the fresh patty meat that was on the grill too long to serve as a burger. Put in water and microwaved, then frozen until it's chilli time.

Cooked meat is still safe to eat after it's been in the fridge. Do you not eat your leftovers after it's been put in the fridge?

Not entirely sure. I never made it personally. Only chopped up the meat with a spatula. It is cooked/warmed up for hours in a big pot where we make grilled chicken. Then some of it is put in a reservoir near the sandwich station for easy delivery to the bowls.

Not sure about chili but fresh food in general would be when it's busy. Like lunch hour or rush hour. I've totally held up the line because I didn't make enough patties. So you're usually guaranteed to get it fresh AF

maybe it was a bad one. not sure if i plan to ever get the shredded chicken burrito again at taco bell i had a piece of dry chicken stuck in my throat i ended up vomiting my dinner chewed effectively but it still got stuck regardless of how much water/soda i drank.

there's also the bad chili incident at taco time but that was more related to what i got sick from. ended up barfing a few times in the night into the sink.

Dominos doesn't even wash their pizza pans with soap because it would ruin the flavoring from the seasoned pans. Employees even use the same hands to handle meats and raw vegetables when putting ingredients on a pizza. All the germs would get killed in the oven.

Wendys chili is gross. Old dried out burgers boiled in water and mixed with concentrate base and beans then put on a warmer for 2 hours then carried over to the next day.

Yeah, this. The reason that it's basically boiled in cheap sauce and vegetables no one else wants is because it's basically garbage meat to begin with.
