Ya'll can joke all you want, but space defense is pretty important. You gotta think long-term. Is there an immediate need for it now? No. But what about 25 years from now? 50? You have to stake out early if you want to be on the forefront by the time it gets big.

The only problem I have with this is this: Suppose we do get the USSF going. Great. We've created a sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces that won't do much until decades later, when the technology has gotten to the point where there's actually a need for it. In that time, it's just a money pit that will just suck more money, thus fattening the already-gargantuan military budget. Why? Because of the idea that America should be first in everything and fuck all who disagree.

It's wasteful spending and just a waste of resources that would be better spent elsewhere, like adding to the budget to fix the country's crumbling infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc.

It's too bad the government doesn't want to be first in eradicating child poverty and having universal healthcare, better public education and infrastructure, etc... Failing to invest in the nation and its people will 100% cause it to fail at some point. It's unsustainable. Look at the USSR. Minus freedom of speech and property rights, it's not looking a whole hell of a lot different ideologically. The "brain drain" and a misuse of funds on things like the military killed them.

It's just another concept of insurance through threat of force. Nuclear arms require an insane amount of financial and material support to sustain, yet the U.S requires them to be a substantial force on the planet. Same will go for crazy shit a few decades from now.
Country 1: "We'll fry your satellites if you mess with us!"
Country 2: "Then we will also shut down your satellites!"

And the cycle continues. Fun-fact: GPS is NOT a globally used system, despite the name. Other countries use their own systems for geospatial tracking and measurement. It is a genuine issue if GPS (or another positioning system) were to go down due to an electronic warfare attack. That's why the U.S wants to get a Space Force up and running. 99% of their personnel will be stationed on Earth in its infancy, without a doubt. They'll just be the ones that all the systems are turned over to from the Air Force.

That's why we have people in the Air Force dedicated to do stuff involving space. If we already didn't have people who worked with anything involving space, I would think it would be an ok idea. But we actually have people that actually work with stuff in space...

Kind of like it makes sense to start training soldiers months into a war rather than before the war >_>

Or maybe you want to wait until China has built up fortifications and is attempting to deny access to the rest of the world (a la the South China Sea).

...infrastructure money would get siphoned elsewhere, as it always does. Education needs cost controls, not a larger budget. Healthcare shouldn't be free. Otherwise keep in mind that in the 1960s plenty of people were arguing against our space program and insisting that the money be better spent elsewhere.

...you mean the USSR which centralized power and had the state responsible for all matter of public interests? You know, as in EXACTLY what you're proposing to do? How well did that work out for them again?

Large, centralized systems fail. Lots of bureaucracy inevitably leads to lots of corruption and misused funds.

There's no need to just add in space. It's already literally a part of the Air Force. It makes enough sense that it's been that way already. So, yes, it makes more sense then folding the marine under the same umbrella since space is already a part of the Air Force...

The Army Air Corps was once its own entity until the Air Force was created out of it in 1947. The need for a dedicated branch commited to air power was what led to that. @LinkPizza, for as much as you speak of having been in the Air Force, I think it would be remiss of you to have disregarded that fact.

Well, the Air Force inserted space into its mission and has been angling hard to include it (and cyberspace, which actually makes even less intrinsic sense to be specifically shouldered by the air force vs. other branches) because...expanded mission = more money.
But I don't think it's ever been officially declared the lead military branch on either front, and the other branches would like a piece of that military-industrial pie as well.

My opinion: Sure, give the Air Force space, but....we don't need a space force for a long time. Cyber should probably be under NSA or the like.

It does sound dumb, but to be fair, it probably wasnt decided on by just him and we already have the air force so it was probably intended to sound similar. But yeah, it probably would be better if it the name was a little more sophisticated
