Recommend a movie you'd rather go see. Maybe you can all compromise, seeing superhero movies occasionally but also mixing things up. Ultimately you can either sit through a movie you don't care for in order to spend time with them or you can just skip those outings, your choice.

In this day and age, it kind of is. The days of 90 minutes movies are long dead, and most of the major blockbusters are aiming for 2 1/2 to 3 hour run times. Even when that becomes monotonous and soul-numbing (like Batman v Superman).

But either way, it's still less than 200 minutes, which is what he was responding to in the first place.

Really depends on the genre. Horror movies and comedies still tend to clock in at around 90 minutes (including the newly released Unfriended: Dark Web, The First Purge, and Hotel Transylvania 3). Adventure/Action movies just seem to get longer and longer, though. I fully expect that 4-hour movies are around the corner.

I wouldn't count low-budget horror (which is 99% of horror, honestly) as "major blockbuster". And most modern horror is aimed at a teenage demo that is basically just jump-scares and hyperkinetic cinematography because most young people today have the attention span of a gnat.

The same logic applies to most kid-aimed movies (which is where I'd toss Hotel Transylvania), because the idea of a kid who can sit still and watch a movie for more than 90 minutes would be like finding the city of El Dorado.

Originally I had just quoted the first part of that sentence, but realized that I should leave in the second half in because it pertained to my remark about action/adventure movies. At any rate, the majority of films in theaters at any given moment aren't "blockbusters" and the first reference didn't specify blockbusters.

More importantly, blockbusters (or at least action/adventure blockbusters) were *always* longer so implying that this is some new trend is misleading. Even something like Die Hard -- which came out a full 20 years ago -- was 132 minutes.

I feel like movies such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy are the only ones that can pull off 2,5 - 3+ hour runtimes. Other movies just can't.

Titanic was also about 3 hours long, right? I guess that movie could pull it off as well.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that only certain movies can do it and do it well.

Like Michael Bay's Transformers(4 and 5 specifically), they get really fucking boring because they're so unnecessarily long.

I'd be tempted to dispute this for the average modern multiplex. Blockbusters tend to make up a much larger portion of the overall marketplace these days than ever before, because of the nature of movies and the slow creep of home theater and media services sort of phasing theaters out for "lesser" films.

It's why a lot of "art house" style films are turning to Netflix rather than seeking out theatrical release (or at least solely theatrical release).

No, but my post did. And you were responding to me, not the first post.

More importantly, blockbusters (or at least action/adventure blockbusters) were *always* longer so implying that this is some new trend is misleading.

Blockbusters have been longer than other films ever since the concept of the "blockbuster" became a thing (for which a lot of people mainly blame George Lucas and Steven Spielberg), but when you compare the average blockbuster run time of today to the average blockbuster run time of 20-30 years ago, they've absolutely gotten longer.

Even outside of blockbusters, the average runtime of most films in any genre is longer today than it used to be. Most seem to start from the assumption that 90 minutes is the default "shortest" time, and try to go at least somewhat longer than that (for cheaper films or specific shorter genres), aiming for closer to 2 hours for most "normal" genres, and far past that (creeping up on 3 hours) for some of the larger epic blockbuster "experiences".

At this point, we've sort of reached a cultural expectation where audiences feel like they haven't even gotten their money worth if a movie is less than 90 minutes, while during the "Golden Age of Film" you'd often see movies that were skirting closer to the 60 minute mark (and even the biggest "epic" films rarely went past 90).

In a sense, it's similar to video games that proclaim how they have "40+ hours of gameplay!" as if length alone was somehow a positive in and of itself, or effectively implying a game that provides 5 hours of fantastic gameplay is somehow a failure for not being longer.

While blockbusters tend to take up a disproportionate number of showings at theaters, the bulk of films hitting theaters any given year aren't typically blockbusters.

No, I was responding specifically to your claim of the 90-minute movie being dead. I highlighted the whole sentence rather than just that one specific claim because I was acknowledging that action/adventure films -- blockbuster or not -- tend to be longer.

Also, I think it's worth noting that "budget horror" -- at least within your chosen context -- is somewhat redundant because horror films are generally far smaller draws. Even the fairly successful films -- like the Saw movies -- tend to pull in less than $150m. Hell, people made a huge deal about the Blair Witch Project's success and that only did $245m -- which puts it well-behind most Disney movies in that same time period.

Horror blockbusters are so rare that horror blockbuster might as well be an oxymoron.

To be fair, those claims arose following widespread complaints about games being too short. I don't necessarily see those claims as portraying a value in itself.

if you don't actually follow the MCU, its possible your mixing up other studios with the MCU films. Deadpool is not MCU. and neither is the xmen movies. if you count just movies based on Marvel Comics than sometimes it's higher, but the MCU only has about 3 at most a year.

this year 2018 only had 2. Infinity War came out in late april and then in July, Antman and the Wasp. and then the next one Captain Marvel is not out til 2019

You forgot Black Panther in February.

The MCU was making 2 movies per year up until last year. Last year they pushed it up to 3 movies per year.

Last year we got GOTG2, Spider-Man Homecoming, and Thor Ragnarok.

This year we got Black Panther, Infinity War, and Ant-Man & The Wasp.

Next year will be Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, and Spider-Man Far From Home.
