But most of the characters were annoying, and it suffered from the same problem a lot of older anime did - stilted lip matching that makes all of the spoken dialogue sound awkward as hell, which only exacerbates the "annoying characters" problem. Throwing in lack of a strong, interesting villain and a meh story, and it gets hard to actually care about any of these people or any of the things they're doing. It might also hurt that this was the first Final Fantasy that felt like it stepped away from mimicking the European fantasy aesthetic and shifted to a more Asian model (with strong Polynesian influences), which starts to push some culture conflict buttons as well. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family <cite>ParanoidObsessive posted [p:904881079] in I'm playin... No, I think he means there are specific enemies that can only be hurt by certain allies. Like, some will only be hurt by black magic. You can barely hurt those guys with Tidus. But Tidus can hurt he really fast enemies, while everyone swings and misses when they attack that enemy. Eventually everyone is the same when you Max the grids but solo runs really switch things up. As your dudes level up, they become faster, stronger, etc. so they don't have any issues hitting the different enemies. I'd say it's something of an improvement over the previous games where you would just have your favored party members that you use for the entire game (until the game inevitably forces you into a point where they're unavailable). It adds some variety. To be fair, when I played FFX, I absolutely spent 99% of my time only using my favored party members, except for situations where the game forced me to switch to someone else in some way. Yeah, but they made an attempt I guess. It wasn't flawless, but it was something. Once you got closer to the end game, it didn't matter who you were using. You could effectively use any character setup. And by that of course I mean Tidus, Wakka, and Auron because obviously that's the team to go with. Now, years later, when most RPGs are action-RPGs with real-time battle, and I'm far more used to reacting on the fly and not having my leisure to think tactically and screw around in menus forever, I still think ATB is the worst of all possible systems. It's straddling halfway between two extremes and being worse than either. It's the same thing I disliked about how they handled mechanics in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Menu-based games should never be ATB (see also, why I don't play RTS games).
