I think it's commonly thought to be Drakengard 3, but I haven't played that.

I mean bosses that depend on status ailments to beat you generally suck but FFIX's last boss is pretty tame because he's really slow so it's pretty easy to deal with them as long as you've got the right ailments guarded against

Can't think of many that were outright bad but I almost quit playing on Terranigma's final boss, that whole game wore me down though.

Fable 2 if you want to count that as an RPG

Anyway, I think the answer for me in terms of annoyance might be Brave Fencer Musashi. Maybe Shadow Hearts Covenant because it throws a fight at you totally unlike anything else in the game up to that point. The rest of the game is pretty easy and then they throw a difficulty spike at you with the last boss.

In terms of lameness, it's Chrono Cross.

I dunno. I don't judge final bosses solely just on the fight itself. Everything surrounding that fight is pretty great stuff.

The fight feeling like it has weight is important imo, even if the fight itself isn't that interesting. Like Ultimecia is one of the best final bosses in FF but it's not because the dynamics of the fight itself are particularly fun or strategic-- it just feels like a final boss though.

The problem with Braska's Final Aeon is it just kinda feels like a standard boss with off the wall music. I feel like there are several bosses in the game that feel like a bigger deal than that one and it's a shame.

Yeah, I'll agree with that, but I almost feel like it's intentional at that point because Tidus doesn't actually want to beat Jecht anymore and Jecht wants him to beat him.

Gonna say Trails of Cold Steel.

Boss is completely different from like any other fight in the game, has attacks that looks basically the same (but require very different reactions), and depends a lot on luck unless you do like one exact strategy (which isn't honestly that complex, but as mentioned, the boss is unlike anything else in the game)

plus it sets a precedent for one of the lamest mechanics in the sequel

45-60 minute boss where only the last 5 minutes can do anything(Which includes killing you).

Persona 3 is terrible.

Well Final Fantasy IV (and many other RPGs) does that kinda thing to better effect a few times and it's not done by making the boss feel generic.

It's an interesting take on it but I don't really think that it's likely intentional.

Anyway it's a cool fight and much better than the final boss but I probably wouldn't like it as a final boss either as it was. But it wasn't the final boss so I'm not judging it as one. You probably could make it a cool final boss if you wanted to go that way though, though it probably wouldn't make a ton of plot sense.

Really though the way to salvage FFX's final boss is by putting Braska's Final Aeon where it is, moving Seymour out of his speedbump status and putting him as the last dude instead of Yevon/the aeons-- maybe just have Yevon get absorbed by Seymour in a cutscene before the fight or something if you need to wreck Yevon to symbolize the end of the cycle or whatever.

But can't have a FF game without final boss out of nowhere I guess.

end of the game, you're given a choice to befriend the alien (dolphin) invaders and live together, abandon the planet to them, or fight them for supremacy.

if you choose fight, you auto-lose because they didn't get around to programming the fight into the game.

that probably doesn't count but i like sharing it anyways.

I wouldn't consider that the final boss tbh -- I'd go with either the fight in the previous chapter against Nessiah, or the fight in the subsequent PSP-hard-mode-only chapter against No. 3...something-something. Both of which are better.

Granted, that fight against Marietta is legitimately one of the worst fights of all time, there's no denying that.

This is sort of cheating since it's a terrible game, but I thought of Legacy of Goku. The final boss is completely identical to all the other bosses, and effectively every other enemy in the game, except that he and some others can shoot a basic ki blast occasionally. That game takes away everything that makes DBZ interesting or exciting.

The fact that the story and ending is as good as it was shows it didn't really need him there, but including him would have just improved everything just a little (and for him probably a lot).

Cloud of Darkness (FF3, both versions)

In the NES version, she only has one attack. That covers the lameness.

In the DS version, the fact that she goes four times per turn means that she can basically end you whenever she wants by using Particle Beam multiple times. That covers the cheapness.

All of this is after a dungeon, a boss, an unwinnable fight that leads into another dungeon, four more bosses, the necessity of detouring for four ribbons within that dungeon so that the boss cannot Bad Breath you to a wipe caused by status ailments, all without saving.

The gameplay is garbage. So many ohko's that you can do nothing about. Relying on side characters you cant control for no reason. Boss fights that are inexplicably easy compared to the bosses you've already been fighting in the dungeon. A story that moves at a total snails pace.

Bad game design all around that is luckily fixed by its sequels, but Persona 3 itself was garbage.

Side Kick spam got me up to him, but it couldn't close out the deal.
