I've always considered it to be Doctor Octopus but I think the right answer is probably Green Goblin.

My favorite is Venom though and fairly easily at that. I don't much care for the more iconic Spidey villains. Especially not the job squad of Rhino Vulture and The Shocker.

He killed Gwen Stacy. It's going to take a lot to top that.

He's the father of Peter's best friend, and he killed Gwen Stacy. Plus, he started that whole Clone Saga thing, but probably the less said about that, the better.

Yeah that's the big thing that makes me think Green Goblin is the right answer over Dr Octopus

Doc Ock is just a dude who's there a lot with a memorable design. I can't actually remember story arcs he's mattered in. That's merely because I haven't read them, I'm sure, but you can just osmosis the Green Goblin arcs without even having directly read them.

but yeah Venom is the best

There was a fairly recent story where Doc Ock implanted his mind in Spider-Man's body, effectively killiing him for awhile, and went around for a couple years as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Lasted quite awhile, and Ock has a clone Parker body now. I liked it but I know it's a story that not everyone enjoyed.

Also I guess I shouldn't say Venom is my favorite by far

I like Mysterio and Hobgoblin (all 80 of them) a good deal. Carnage was fine too, though he's not much better than Green Goblin.

But among the more infamous ones Venom is definitely the fave by a large margin.

Goblin
Venom
Doc Oc

a lot of Marvel franchises don't have a singular "Big Bad" tbh. DC does with Luthor and Joker being the primary nemeses of Superman and Batman. But... does each of the Avengers have a single "main" foe? And why did they unload Thanos for Infinity War instead of letting the Guardians beat the shit out of him in Vol. 3?

well, in the infinity gauntlet comics the story is based on, all the big marvel heroes that exist (the ones that are left after thanos kills half of the universe's population, that is) fight thanos. that's basically what they're doing in the movies too, even though they call them "avengers" movies. wouldn't make much sense if it were just the guardians fighting him, especially because thanos is supposed to be the most powerful character ever when he has all of the infinity stones.

It looks like everyone agrees on the top 3.

Venom is definitely the one I most associated with being SM's 'rival,' thanks to the 90s cartoon or something. Something about the "anti-Spider-Man" factor.

Doc Ock is the one I remember watching Spidey struggling against, over and over. Dude was so powerful.

Definitely wouldn't have expected GG to be the consensus #1 before making this topic (didn't know that he was responsible for Gwen Stacy, for one thing). I thought his being the villain in the 2002 movie was similar to picking Scarecrow for Batman Begins.

Mystique isn't even remotely close to being runner-up given that she is often not a villain and rarely a major threat. Sentinels as a unit would be higher, Apocalypse would be higher.

I mostly watched the 90s cartoon, where Kingpin/Fisk showed up in like...80% of episodes, (even if he didn't end up directly fighting spiderman, he'd send the person who did) so he felt like the main rival.

Apparently he's not remotely important to spiderman outside of the 90s cartoon though.

(Personal favourite was Doc Oc, but I never expect the "iconic rival" to be the same as my personal favourite villain, so that's a pretty good case against Doc Oc).

Even though green goblin is the main villain of Spider-Man, I kinda have a soft spot for venom. Especially the 90s cartoon, the design alone was amazing. I'm glad venom is getting his own film but I wish he would not be an anti hero. "We are poison to you Spider-Man"

eh, i wouldn't say "not remotely important." he was the villain in amazing spider-man #50, for instance, which was one of the most famous spider-man stories (and a huge inspiration for the spider-man 2 movie). he's not a top 3 spider-man villain, though.

In the movie? He went crazy after they pulled his funding after the first experiment went awry. It was basically his pride as a scientist that motivated him to continue with his plot because he thought he would definitely succeed if given enough time and money.

Personal favorite Spider-Man villain is the Vulture, classic version.

It takes balls to be an elderly man with the most basic of abilities (flight) and deciding to embark on a life of crime going up against someone a third your age and ten times as powerful as you.
