Hi everyone!

Season 5 of the Mafia Championship is currently running over at www.mafiauniverse.com

It's a huge tournament where 170 communities each send a representative to compete in a series of games, during which players vote on who among them is the best player, ultimately crowning one champion.

This year, board 8 nominated Paratroopa as their representative.

In addition to that, one of the later games in the season was missing players due to some people from more, uh, "casual" sites flaking out, so IfGodCouldDie volunteered as a replacement and was slotted in.

The town won this game on day 6, but IGCD was the last surviving scum member. He made a valiant effort, replacing in on day 1 and immediately jumping in to the game and not giving anyone reason to suspect he was having trouble integrating. In true board 8 style, he pushed people for claims and analyzed all posts related to night actions or setup or roles - and he played the part well enough that most everyone townread him for the first 5 days, because they felt his pushes on people showed no nervousness or timidity - until he was the final scum left and the town had unfortunately done such a good job working together that there was no way to keep going.

This was a rough game for town. The town forced their jailkeeper (their strongest role) to claim day 1, which got them nightkilled night 1. This town is known for causing the worst mislynch of the season - they lynched their top poster on day 1 out of paranoia, and because the town "leader"'s feelings were hurt that that the top poster didn't give them an immediate town read on page 1. Para fought to avoid this mislynch on day 1, and then he fought to avoid another town mislynch on a weak player day 2, but the town was too scattered and not willing to listen. Scum killed Para on night 2 (the first non-claimed-power kill) because they felt he was the only one who wasn't falling for their tricks, and was the most likely to catch them. Town didn't have very many good players besides Para, so the scum were able to coast by without doing much as townies lynched their own people, and this led to a near sweep, though one scum got lynched on the first lylo because no one voted until the last 10 minutes of the day and the most inactive townie in the game randomly placed a vote on scum, and everyone froze, and the scum got lynched. Scum won the next day anyway.

When the game ends, the players all vote for who they think the best player was. NOT the MVP, but the best player. (In other words, evaluate if you think people who died early were better players during their time alive than people who survived later and did more)

Para placed 1st in voting, over a very close result with the members of the winning scum team placing 2nd and 3rd.

So Para moves on to the finale game which will take place in August!

It does seem like it would be difficult to fairly compare a town player vs a scum player from one game and say who played better. But I don't have any suggestions for a better way of doing it, either.

Since we need a change of subject, let's go. I've been thinking lately that I'd like to try actually hosting a game for the first time at some point. Not going to be in the super near future since in addition to being busy playing right now, I need to brush up on a lot of stuff I've forgotten over the years where I wasn't playing, but I'll probably start looking into it soon. Anyone have advice for a good place to start looking up stuff about hosting to make sure I get everything right (obviously I know to get someone to balance check the setup and to try to recruit a co-host, but that's for after I've gotten started)?

As long as you get some extra eyes to help balance then don't be afraid to have some fun with the setup.

When balance checking try and account for best and worst case scenarios as far as actions are concerned to make sure it won't be a blowout by day 2.

Make sure you double check night action results. One of the biggest games ever on Board 8 was ruined due to host messing up a night action result.

Wasn't I like 16 when we hosted that?

It was probably a totally fixable error but I just believed too much in game integrity to keep it going. lol

I remember the time I was lynched in brawl but actually someone else had more votes than me...
