Not intelligence, wealth or being a "good" person. The ability to hold off on small short term benefits for greater long term benefits is king. Sadly it seems to be something this generation lacks in any great capacity. I think one of the most striking and important example of this "mindset" (or lack thereof) is the modern attitude towards the intimate connection between a man and a woman. Pre-marital sex is a textbook example of what I mean by going for a small benefit out of a want for self control. What is really sad about it is, unlike many other examples where the person will later realize their mistake, this kind of behavior is just accepted as normal these days. The men think they're somehow the top dogs for sleeping around (even when the average woman, at no prior point in history, had as many sexual partners as now) and the women think it is """empowering""" or some such nonsense. Mind you, I am not saying people should not have the right to act as such, in fact it is a useful tool for determining who is acceptable to associate with, but society has fallen quite far to go as far as to defend such acts. A society that champions lust and other base animal instincts over reason and restraint is one sick with a fatal illness. Truly, my co-workers have mentioned to me more than once that I need to go out and "get some" and look at me with the baffled faces of brute beasts when I try to explain my points to them, which are essentially facts. I plan on speaking to HR if the subject is brought up again (not because it bothers me, but it really is not an appropriate conversation topic for work) but I know it would ultimately do no good. If I had any political power I'd put laws into effect that would heavily fine anyone who produced a child without a marriage license and make said licenses legal contracts that would actually be enforceable (for example, cheaters would be jailed and divorce would be illegal).

Oh well, that'll never happen. No politician would do anything to displease such a large percentage of the masses, even if it was for the kind term benefit of the country, and we are back to square one.

I was playing a Visual Novel PS4 game last night, 25th Ward: The Silver Case (Sequel to The Silver Case) and there was one thought-provoking part that got to me.
When you have a cavity, you go to the dentist to get a filling, root canal or whatever. You don't just use painkillers to ease the pain and temporarily make it go away, you go to the dentist to get the long-term or permanent fix.
I do see where TC is coming from. It works that way in many aspects of life.

The idea of a successful life varies from person to person. For any given human that doesn't care for the glitzy shine of technology, the shallow buzz of being surrounded by 3 dozen half-friends at any given moment, and hopelessly trying to accomplish goals that aren't their own, success comes very easily.

Most people are unsuccessful because they try to attain things they don't need or want.

I'd say monks are extremely successful. They know what they want, they set out to achieve it, and they get there. That's success.

Also, wow, upon reading TC's post, I can agree with the first half, not so much with the second.

Self-control is important, I don't think infidelity and divorce should have legal punishments and restrictions lmao

This whole post seriously reminds me of a bible passage.

Revelation 20:19-24

I know your deedsyour love, your faith, your service, your perseveranceand your latter deeds are greater than your first. But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols. Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, she is unwilling. Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation unless they repent of her deeds. Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

God loves all His children, he curses the children of satan. Educate yourself. Matthew 13:24-31

24 Then Jesus told them another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who planted good seed in his field. 25 That night, when everyone was asleep, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat and then left. 26 Later, the wheat sprouted and the heads of grain grew, but the weeds also grew. 27 Then the mans servants came to him and said, You planted good seed in your field. Where did the weeds come from? 28 The man answered, An enemy planted weeds. The servants asked, Do you want us to pull up the weeds? 29 The man answered, No, because when you pull up the weeds, you might also pull up the wheat. 30 Let the weeds and the wheat grow together until the harvest time. At harvest time I will tell the workers, First gather the weeds and tie them together to be burned. Then gather the wheat and bring it to my barn.
