I'm almost halfway through Nero's missions (Special Edition), and it's fine, but the camera is just....it's frankly incredibly jarring how bad the camera is. It's 10 years old so I'm giving it a little leeway, but I can't help but compare it unfavorably to DmC's camera.

The sword reving is also frustrating, really takes me out of the action and is doing the flow of combat no favors. Maybe that will change? I also want the range on the hand to be longer.

Still, it's better than I remember it being 7 years ago when I decided to quit after the frog demon. Just curious if it gets better since I see a lot of people say they like it more than 3 which isn't true for me yet, and I know the Dante campaign will probably be more up my alley considering my two big Nero issues.

I love it, it's probably the DMC I have the most time on. I've sunk well over hundreds of hours into Bloody Palace alone, on both the original 360 version and the SE (and they're almost exclusively Vergil). I've completed the story countless times too.

The combat feels the best for me here, it's fast and smooth and technical and makes you feel truly powerful and in control.

One of my personal criticisms is that I don't really care for the setting, the monster design, weak lore, and some of the mission puzzles are tedious.

I don't know how the lengths of the five campaigns in the game compare, but if it's all the same length then it certainly has quite a crazy amount of content.

...of course if it's still all the same levels, I'll probably never actually play them. Few things are worse in games to me than being made to replay the same levela/stages.

Sick as hell, Nero's arm and sword revving is so awesome and makes him more fun than Dante (though Dante has much more expressiveness which is also awesome). Story sucks ass though which shouldn't matter for DMC but it does.

You're talking about the slow revving? You're not supposed to do that unless you're trying to start off a fight with 3 bars or something. You're supposed to do the instant-rev between every attack. Which feels soooooo damn good and addictive and flows perfectly.

It's the reason why I decided to boot this game up in the first place <_<

I need SOME context for DMCV!

I got the instant rev thing but I can't seem to get it to work. Must be something I'm missing.

Honestly it's really wierd that I'm enjoying the game as much as I am, because on paper I hate everything about it except when I'm actively engaged in combat.

These puzzles/platforming segments are....I hate to be repetitive, but it's shocking that somebody thought the gyros, the jump pads, or the dice were in any way, shape, or form a good idea.

But hey, better than the sum of it's parts and all that, at least so far. It's clear that I prefer CAGs with a heavy focus on counter or dodging mechanics, though.

It's just insanely difficult. The timing is like 4 frames (1 for MAX Exceed) and it's different for every single attack. But with practice it actually becomes pretty reliable (not the MAX one though).

DMC4 definitely has the best combat in the series but the content is literally the same stretch of levels over and over. Depending on who you ask, it's possible the game was less than half finished when Capcom wanted it released. Essentially gameplay-wise it's as good as it gets but outside of Bloody Palace you don't really have much quality content to flex that awesomeness in.

Foolmo has it right, the key to playing Nero is to use the skills that rev after every attack. You'll basically never want to manually rev unless it's during legit downtime between fights. Dante's gameplay is very much like DMC3 but even more refined and you can switch styles on the fly. It's fucking glorious.

The four other campaigns you're talking about are all literally exactly the same as Nero's. Dante's is part of the main story but you do the levels backwards. The other three were added in the much more recent special edition - Vergil just does a Nero run while the ladies switch places with the main crew, Lady doing the Nero run and Trish doing the reverse Dante run.

Here's hoping DMC5 can build on DMC4's excellent combat while actually having a completed, fleshed out campaign ala DMC3!

Haven't personally played DmC but from what I've seen it seems alright. Probably around DMC1 in terms of ranking (it would have been fine if it was its own thing instead of pretending to be Devil May Cry). DMC2 is clear bottom tier

DMC4 is awesome

This is my ranking exactly, ^5.

DMC1 has outstanding atmosphere but the gameplay feels like it comes up really short in light of how CUH-RAZY the series is by this point. The Resident Evil puzzles, while admitedly pretty cool, feel like they're out of place.

DmC is a an above average action game but is really bad about representing anything about what DMC is supposed to be. (Color coded enemies and weakness-exploiting combat instead of free form styling on your foes are big missteps I can name without going in to too much detail.) That said, it's still admittedly pretty darn fun to play. I'd put it at about DMC1's level overall, personally.

DMC2 is... DMC2. I think it easily takes the cake as the worst PS2 game I've personally played.

I'm playing through 1 for the first time since the DMC5 trailer hyped me up to go through the series (having only played DmC before and enjoyed it, and being hyped as fuck for DMC3 back in the day but being too young to convince my parents to get for me)

Just finished Mission 15 I think it was, killing the big bird Griffon. I wasn't expecting how little of the way of story it gets, Trish just kind of pops in and out when she wants which is weird lol. Game is janky but for being 2001 it's not like, offputting. The underwater sections were SUPER jank though lmao

DMC1 is a little weird in that it's pretty clearly still got trappings of initially being a Resident Evil prototype with some RE style puzzles and stronger horror elements than later games.

Skip DMC2, it's bad and since it's at the end chronologically (maybe before 5 though, we don't know) you're not really missing anything.

That last Mundus fight though....it's adventurous for what they were going for with that fight in 2001! I ended up just using an Untouchable and cheesing it because woo boy that platforming to get up to hit Mundus. Excited to get to DMC2!

Yeah, I also got the PS4 bundle after the trailer came out. I loved the RE feel of the first one. Just finished 2 and it just felt pretty basic and mindless. Don't see what is so offensive about it besides it's awful structure.

I had thought the game was replaying the same stuff as Dante simultaneously with Nero, and you would meet up at the same points in each campaign. Like, when they talked about the sword getting stolen from Dante, that the Dante playthrough would start there.

I also thought each character got 20 chapters.

A lot less content than I expected!

Luckily the fun is in actually playing as the characters, and you've got a bunch more to try! It just sucks that all that awesome combat is limited to such a boring and clearly unfinished world. =/

1 chapter in and I can already tell that I'm gonna disagree wildly with the idea that Nero is more fun to play, which was already gonna be the case considering I don't like snatch. Merely being able to dash in Trickster means, to me, that everything to this point was just work I had to do to get to the real game.

Also Nero himself is still a total loser, and Dante being cocky in one cutscene is better than anything prior.

Also I assume this means no grapple puzzles anymore, so....100% improvement.
