But there are potential results that get eliminated over time. Perhaps discontent is useful for the survival and advancement of the species. Evolution might preclude a result of happiness. An individual human can set a goal for their life. They can determine the meaning for themself. But does doing so make one happy? One can drive pleasure from setting goals and achieving them. Or one can fail at their goals and cause their own misery. One could be most comfortable living in the present. Even if you dismiss all higher orders of purpose and meaning, there's still an intrinsic meaning to life driven by biological selection (ie, the innate desire to propagate and extend the species) which is, in itself, fairly objective meaning because throughout history genes have been carried over through biological imperatives. Of course, given that humans evolved as social animals, there's an inherent secondary meaning in that humans don't just try to help themselves and their offspring but society as well because that society provides benefits and protections.
