Going back to the conversation on isekai shows, I also watched Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody today (mostly because I'm trying to catch up on more 2018 stuff). It wasn't terrible but almost everything about it felt generic and it didn't do much of anything with the few interesting concepts it might've had. For example, for a society with so much slavery, the morality of it was barely examined at all. I did appreciate a few things, though. Actually seeing the main character interact with game mechanics was nice to have. Also the bland teenage MC casually going and banging some prostitutes was just about the last thing I expected from an anime like this, so good for it on surprising me I guess!

There's a lot of awful ones out there. Glass Reflection and Mother's Basement stand out above most, and Super Eyepatch Wolf has been at the forefront ever since his Fall of Bleach video. Gigguk still narrowly edges him out for me though, primarily because I think he's a better editor.

A recent fav of mine from him is the history of Mecha video he did, pretty sure I linked it a while back.

Like through episode 5 the premise was dumb yeah but it had good comedy and character building moments.

However stuff is just happening and everything seems like its purely for convenience. I said in a past post that the thing where it would just drop a vague story tease at the end of each episode was a troubling sign of sloppy writing.

I've finished the first season of Symphogear. I didn't hate it but the world-building really didn't work for me. I don't know if I wasn't paying enough attention or what, everything about the setting just went over my head. The logic behind the Noise appearances and the secret government organization that fought them seemed like a bunch of random stuff that was happening to facilitate flashy battles. Even by the end when they finally explained a few important things the Noise come from... an ancient priestess who lives through DNA who is trying to destroy the moon to reverse the Curse of Babel? Uhhh? I'm still so confused. Still, I hope this was just a rough start and that later seasons will improve now that the groundwork is done with. As for the rest of it, the singing magical girl battles were alright. I liked Hibiki quite a bit too! Even with all my problems I feel like watching the rest just to see more of her being a dork about friendship. I hope she hasn't fully overcome her rage mode, seeing her turn black and go nuts was the best part of the anime so far.

I'm starting to get excited for a new season now that it's only about three weeks away! It'll depend on where they all end up streaming but even with only a glance at the list it looks like I'll be watching at least twenty shows.

Most people find the later seasons of Symphogear to be quite a bit better than the first. They're definitely more refined.
