I do not have a wife or a girlfriend, nor do I expect that situation to change. I've more or less made my peace with that, it's not quite where I'm going with this.

The thing is, there's an opera on Saturday (with a couple more shows coming up). I'd like to go, but it's on the other side of town and it's kind of weird to go to one of these by yourself. I should know, I tried it once and people around me (all couples) got kind of weirded out. Not my fault, I like Offenbach.

It's times like this having a standing date would be nice. I'd like to be able to watch an opera, which in this case is a romance, and just enjoy it for what it is without feeling self-conscious about it.

I kinda like this idea. If you don't have a random friend who would also like to see an opera you should definitely go as a reviewer.

I had attended a performance of Parsifal back in February with only myself for company (which is the case in all my concert-goings), and ended up to the left of a few elderly folks. By the first intermission, the two older ladies of the bunch were asking me how I was enjoying everything, and by curtain fall, the one of the two that wasn't a widow had spoken more with me than she had with her husband (who was also present). Though I also second some of the other comments about not putting any great stock in others' opinions of your outings, don't discount that you might land in a better flock next time(s) around. And if not, c'est la vie; the important dialogue for you to have is with the artwork, not your fellow audience members.

i go to movies/concerts alone often enough, but i wouldn't feel comfortable going to an opera alone either (perhaps because it's such a formal occasion). once i just go it probably wouldn't be a big deal, though.
