28. The Boss Baby

Stifled: 14
Genny: 16
Karo: 22
charon: 25
JONA: 26
Ermine: 29
Johnbobb: 29
Snake: 33
scarlet: 34
Inviso: 36
red: 40

Stifled: Babies that get desk jobs and management jobs right after birth? A secret cuteness struggle between puppies and babies? Thats pretty clever! Apparently this movie gets a lot of flack, but I really liked it. Alec Baldwin was the perfect choice and is, strangely, a very believable business savvy infant. By the end, I really loved Tim and Boss Baby as a buddy pairing and want to see more misadventures of theirs. In fact, even as enemies, they had good chemistry. And some Beatles music tossed in for good measure? Yes please!

Traviss opinion: He liked the puppies and the few instances of car chase type stuff, but didnt pay this one a lot of mind.

Genny: Boss Baby receives my award for most surprising animated film of 2017, mostly because I thought it would be hot garbage based on the trailers. Well they put almost all the worst bits in their advertisements so there wasn't much else outside of a few baby butts to cry about. The humor was hit or miss for me, with slightly more hits, perhaps because I watched with a couple of margaritas I dunno. I honestly don't have much else to say about it other than that the villain and his plot were both ridiculous, but Timmy and BB's relationship was kind of sweet.

Karo: The titular character is an executive from BabyCorp, a company that manufactures babies and somehow makes a profit off of it. This angle is probably supposed to be cute and whimsical, but the amount of incomprehensibility and plot holes it causes is astronomical. Chief of which is that Tim's mother is literally shown to be pregnant with a child that just evaporates into thin air when Baby Donald Trump shows up at the door in a taxi cab. What the flying fuck? Anyway Boss Baby looks like a baby but has the mentality of an adult, something that has totally not ever been done before. He pretends to be a normal baby in order to glean info about rival PuppyCorp's new designer puppy that threats the unbalance the worlds' love resources. Yes, seriously. In the end, B.B. predictably grows to care for his new family and eventually leaves BabyCorp in order to be a real boy and grow up.

Despite this fact, a sequel was announced almost immediately. Yes, Boss Baby 2 after Boss Baby is all grown up. If this is going to go down the path of adult diaper fetishism I'm getting the fuck out of Dodge.

charon: I'm not sure who came up with this concept but it's definitely out there in left field. Granted I know this is once again based on a children's book, but DreamWorks has really been reaching lately for that sort of thing. Despite the odd ideas presented here, I must say I enjoyed the concept after all. Baldwin is very good here, the chemistry is on point and there's actually a lot of clever humor for adults to be found, something I feel DW has struggled with as of late. It's not the sort of film that's meant to be considered one of the greats honestly, but I feel like it knows that and just does the best at being the best of what it actually is; a silly film based on a quirky idea. And for that, it performs the job in excellent fashion.

JONA: I thought the ideas for this movie were pretty intriguing, even if its just Codename: Kids Next Door but with babies, and the boy and the baby had some decent chemistry. Its nothing amazing, but I thought it was enjoyable enough.

Ermine: I feel like if this movie was a bit more creative and outgoing, it could have been something pretty special. Also if it got rid of the babies too. I'm in a weird position where I sort of like the movie, but also hate it at the same time. There's some damn awful jokes and terribly cringe moments but then there is also a few gems hidden inside that help to clear away the stink. I can't help but wish that more of the movie would have been just focused around Tim and his imagination adventures. I don't think the idea they had for the film would have worked at all if they had gone with that route, but it's something I was wanting by the end of the film as every imagination sequence was pretty fun. I went into this movie expecting to hate the guts out of it but it's not all that bad, and this is coming from someone who absolutely despises babies in almost every medium. So while I'm pleased that it wasn't as bad as I had imagined, I'm left a bit disappointed in what this could have been. Also... Puppies >>>>>> Babies

Johnbobb: The Boss Baby is the touching but sad story of a kid struggling with severe schizophrenia, suffering from delusions of Alec Baldwins character from Glengarry Glenn Ross. In between the plot (that was nonsensical even by kid movie standards) and jokes that didnt seem to understand their audience, their were SOME laughs. But those laughs were more AT the movie than with it, except in the few moments Alec Baldwin was legitimately entertaining. How the fuck did this movie get made? Pro-tip: Netflix gives the option to watch the movie in Spanish. Its WAY better that way.

Snake: Real original, novel concept. Oh wait, no it isnt. Awkward humor and really uninteresting plot.

scarlet: If cookies are for closers, The Boss Baby not only doesnt deserve a cookie, but it owes each member of every audience multiple cookies for sitting through unfunny, pedantic, annoying, boring nonsense, all while being blinded with a blandly animated budget film. It has all of the drama of Growing Up Bella with all of the laughs of small children screaming at 3 AM in a Transatlantic plane flight.

Inviso: God this movie was awful. Its like someone came up with the idea of lets have Alec Baldwin voice a baby in a suit and they didnt bother writing a decent movie to go along with that concept. I naturally hate babies. Thats just a me thing. They annoy me. And making the main character a seven-year-old? Not gonna do a lot to make me like the film. But yeah, everything about this is either cliched, or stupid. Babies are a random heaven company at odds with PuppyCo? Stupid. Kid is worried about a new baby brother? Cliched. Kid flies to Vegas and has an imagination play sequence? Stupid. Kid and baby, once enemies, become best friends by the end of the movie and give up on their original dreams to be together. Cliched. Its just super cheesy and completely unenjoyable.

red: I was totally incapable of turning my brain off enough for this movie. The plot is annoying baby nonsense that no one should ever enjoy(But I am painfully reminded it made a ton of money). We must stop the world from loving puppies because...reasons. The Boss Baby himself is endlessly annoying, the older kid is jealous and annoying, and the plot is nonsensical. No formula makes you turn into a baby, expect this to only show up at the most convenient times. The movie just has no natural flow to it, things only happen at extreme convenience, making everything feel forced. The characters are annoying, the plot is annoying, and I just wanted to hate everything throughout this entire movie. Also whoever thought of the forever puppy is an idiot. Puppies are the things you put up with so you can have a good dog later(They are still cute, just destructive). They chew everything, they bite everything, they destroy everything in sight. They should have gone with kittens, kittens don't do anything but roll around and be cute before turning into a cat that just wants to be fat and lazy while you worship them.

27. An American Tail: Fievel Goes West

Ermine: 7

red: 18
Johnbobb: 24
JONA: 31
scarlet: 32
Inviso: 35
Snake: 35

Stifled: 38

Ermine: This is a bit of a tricky one for me, because for the most part the movie is fairly average but holy crap its highs are fantastic. Cat R. Waul in particular is excellent and I looooved his accent. That is like an instant sell for Ermine. Animal character that has a good design, personality and a fun accent. Wylie Burp is also a pretty fun character as well and it's a shame we don't really get to see much of him at all until the last quarter of the movie.

Getting back to the highs of the movie though. Wylie's scene where he's teaching Tiger to be a dog is just plain good fun. I really loved the subtle touch of when Tiger was walking by and passed behind a lantern that was in the foreground and it showed Tiger as a dog. Little things like that can really make scenes wonderful. Speaking of wonderful scenes though, holy crap I loved the scene where Cat R. Waul discovers Tanya. By far the best song of the American Tail movies, this scene alone propels this movie at least 10 spots for me. It's just so perfect in every way and it really is such a disappointment that this doesn't cause a change in Cat's character. I know that would take a bit more actual effort in writing, but god if I didn't want Cat R. Waul to do an about-face. I expect too much out of animated movies sometimes, but it would have been so amazing. I'm not sure what it is, but that scene just makes me feel so much for the kitty because I feel like that's exactly how I would respond and feel about her singing. His emotions and actions in that scene are just wonderful. I legit had chills the whole time.

Alright enough gushing. The last half the movie is pretty fun and the first half is relatively alright. One strong scene in particular rockets this movie way higher than I would normally place it.

Karo: In this far more comedic sequel, Fievel and his family head out to the wild west where purportedly cats live in harmony with all mousekind. This of course ends up being about as true as American streets being paved with cheese, and Fievel and Tiger then become cowboys and fight a bunch of wild west ruffians. One thing of note is even though the villain Cat R. Waul is unquestionably evil, he shows actual kindness and concern towards Fievel's sister Tanya, to the point of even putting his dastardly plan in jeopardy when her life was in danger. It's an interesting depth and gray area that is almost never seen in western animated movies.

I wouldnt quite call it better as the original, but as far as animated sequels go it is good that they made something that really feels different, rather than just retreading the first movie like is so often done.

Genny: This is another one that's going to get a bit of a nostalgia boost, but the reason I've placed it as high as I did is because I actually enjoyed it more than I did the original American Tail. Most of that enjoyment comes from the lessened focus on Feivel in favor of more compelling characters like Tiger, Cat R. Waul (oh ho ho what a punny name), and to a lesser extent Tanya, Miss Kitty, and Wiley Burp. Some of that character direction does fall flat e.g. Tanya becoming obsessed with stardom for no real reason to the point that she ignores her brother's warnings, but the point is the movie is elevated by many new characters as opposed to bogged down by it. The villain's plan wasn't terrible in theory, but in practice it was terribly executed. How in the world did he expect to keep his diva after he ate her whole family? You can't have your mouse burger and eat it too, Pussy Poo! Putting aside that nonsense and the fact that Feivel is crowned as a hero despite not doing anything to earn it you just have a fun adventure story with a cool western backdrop

red: With their original journey to a better life ending in failure, the jewish mice are tricked into heading west. West where, supposedly, the cats arent going to try to murder them and they all live happily ever after. Except, of course, that the cats are going to try to murder them. Tanya's story of making the cats realize they can live with the mice in some circumstances is somewhat endearing, but Fievel's adventure to get Tiger to become a dog is a bit less so and ends up being, well, strange. Strange is capped off with a weird and awkward fight sequence at the end of the movie.

Johnbobb: Man, it feels like this movie wouldve been outdated even in 1991. The jokes werent funny, which is made even worse by the fact that Ive heard them all a dozen different times in a dozen different movies. Some of the animation is nice, but beyond that, this doesnt hold up nearly as well as other animated adventures from the era. Like, its not a bad movie, but its less inventive than the average Tom & Jerry episode.

JONA: I remembered that when I was a kid I loved this movie. Then I
remembered that I would just watch the beginning and the end on rewatches. I still stand by that decision.

scarlet: Much like any unnecessary sequel, the credibility of the original is strained to a breaking point, tarnished by an undeserved legacy of mediocrity. Somewhere, out there, might be a good concept to follow the heartwarming tale of immigration told through a small, intimate moving tale of a young mouse, but its not here. What results is the story of a mouse that goes west in search of a plot, only to find that, apparently, the west is full of very poorly written overgeneralizations of an entire genre mired in really unfunny comedy.
Rating: 31/100

Inviso: SoI wasnt a huge fan of the original movie, mostly because Fievel was an obnoxious little shit with a terrible child voice actor that ruined the movies musical nature for me. Fievel Goes West ispretty much the same exact movie all over again. Tiger is awkward and doesnt fit societal standards of cats, Fievel goes running off and stumbles upon some sinister plans that get him in trouble. And theres a genius cat faking kindness towards the mice just so he can fuck with them later. Its BETTER than the original, but its still a very lame movie. Oh, and by the way, its hard to feel scared for the characters

Snake: Proof that doing the same thing twice is not a sure thing for success. With a dull western gimmick and loosely connected scenes and antics that almost feel episodic, American Tail 2 also lacks cohesion and an interesting plot and characters.

charon: We see what happens when an animation company decides they want to create a film for a support character but don't quite have the courage to do it without forcing the lead from the first film's name into the title. I really felt like this was basically Tiger's Big Adventure Out West. Fievel does next to nothing here and can't really be viewed as anything but a device to move the actual plot along between scenes. There are some glaring problems with a couple of the other characters as well, one being Tanya. They really destroy her character by taking the kind young girl and making her into a snotty diva in the course of one musical number. The villain here is likable at times, but others you can't really understand how someone so vastly more intelligent than every other character in the film can make such stupid mistakes. The real kicker for me is the ending though. When Fievel admits he's not much of a hero. You'd expect Wylie Burp to reassure him that he is; that doesn't happen. He just agrees that yep, you really didn't do much of anything.

Stifled: I really liked this movie as a kid. Now? Not so much. Not even George fucking Bailey could save this chaotic slapstick showcase. The humor just fell completely flat and it came off as needlessly goofy. The main villain had potential, but his motivations were stupid and ultimately made the plot senseless. Go all the way out west to make mice build you a city and then eat them? You already lived in a city. You already had a ton of mice there. Eat them and take their stuff! Skip the long train ride and bad musical numbers.

Traviss opinion: He meowed at the cats and was pretty focused the entire movie. It really caught his attention.

26. Despicable Me 2

charon: 12
Inviso: 17
scarlet: 20
Stifled: 22
Johnbobb: 23
JONA: 25
Genny: 26
Karo: 29
red: 30
Snake: 34
Ermine: 36

charon: Despite my general dislike of the Minions, I am a fan of their home series (what I've seen so far, anyway). I like Gru. He's a lot of fun and I enjoy his interactions with his adopted daughters and even with the minions. The most comical minions related scene is in this film; it's where Gru is trying to prep himself for asking Lucy out on a date. The over-the-top dress-up works here and the deliver of the simple like, "Uh... no" got me a laugh out loud moment. All in all, the movie is caried by Gru for me. He's just an enjoyable character.

Inviso: I actually thought the original Despicable Me was overrated, so then I get to this movie with low expectations, and it really managed to surprise me. Im not sure WHY, exactly. I guess Gru just felt like a more likable character this time, because he wasnt forced into a fatherhood plot alongside his villainous mastermind plot. This time, yes he had a romantic plot, but it didnt feel like it really took away from the super spy comedy. I think it also helped that the villain was less of an over-the- top caricature, so the focus could stay more on Gru. But yeah, it was a fun movie and I liked it.

scarlet: If youve ever wanted to watch a well-oiled machine attempt to create a film by studio edict, witness the robotic ease with which Despicable Me 2 is churned out. Slick and functional, Despicable Me 2 is the Brave of Illumination Entertainment. Its at this point in Illuminations life cycle that the formula becomes apparent, that the soul that viewers believed was in the studio is demonstrated to be not a soul but a hole. A hole growling with the hunger of greed, only to be sated by gorging on the wallets of middle income households with uninteresting children that lack the compunction to experience something that causes synapses in their brains to actually fire.
Rating: 54/100

Stifled: So. Many. Minions. Blue ones. Yellow ones. MINIONS EVERYWHERE! Ironically, the movie ABOUT the Minions had less Minions overall. And I actually like the little guys, but good lord. They are definitely better when just the core group of them has the spotlight. Anyway, Gru caring about his family is an adorable new layer for his character. And the Luchador themed baddie was cool. It was a pretty enjoyable flick overall.

Traviss opinion: He pointed to the different colors of Minions and said BLUE! and YELLOW! It was cute.

Johnbobb: I liked the original Despicable Me quite a bit. It shined for its over-the-top cinematics and the lovable relationship between Gru and the girls. Despicable Me 2 is okay. It doubles down, maybe even triples down on the minions, which made them by far the least funny thing about the movie. In fact, their presence only got worse on a second watching, making the movie hold up less than it did originally. For what its worth I still like the characters, and I think the movies are pretty decent fun, but its unfortunate that Despicable Me 2 didnt make any attempts to improve on the original.

JONA: Like a good number of people, I didnt like the Minions scenes but they werent enough to make me dislike the movie. The romance between Gru and Lucy was too sudden but I didnt mind it because Lucy was a fun character. The movies got some funny jokes so at the end of the day, its a pretty alright movie.

Genny: I could just as soon curse this movie as praise it for introducing Happy to the unsuspecting world, but that sequence is my favorite in the movie along with the following sequence of Gru being most unhappy in the same setting. Despicable Me 2 is... not as good as the first to say the least. I like Lucy- like, not love. I just can't say I buy her and Gru as a romantic couple more than as job partners. I dunno they already gave him a happy ending in the first movie with kids to look after so was a sequel really necessary? Well obviously because they had to sell more Minions merch, but the honest answer is no. A new zany adventure complete with meandering plot and ridiculous new characters that never amount to anything aside from Lucy and maybe Ramsbottom if I'm being generous just to tell what happens AFTER happily ever after... yeah it doesn't need to exist. Oh well. At least it was fairly fun.

Karo: In this completely unnecessary sequel, Gru is enlisted by the Anti-Villain League to help them catch another villain who was like this really forgettable luchador wrestler or whatever. The original was this funny and touching story of a supervillain who is forced into being a father to a group of cute little girls, and how it changes the way he sees the world. So what do they do in the sequel? The wonderful trio of girls get relegated to background characters, and Gru gets no development other than deciding whether or not he wants to stick his dick in some lady spy vajayjay.

But guess what we get. Minions. Lots of Minions. Doing stupid Minion things in the stupid plot that heavily involves Minions. LAKE TITICACA!! AHAHAHAHA!! MOCHA LATTE!! CINCO DE MAYA!! Gag me with a spoon.

red: Do you like Minions? I hope you like Minions because this movie has a lot of minions. In a weird world of supervillains, rather than expand on our characters place in it, its been decided that Gru needs a girlfriend and the girls need a mother, because we need to spit on the things that we learned in the first movie and single parents dont exist. The movie lacks a lot of the charm of the first and gives us a lot more minions. Needless sequel that simply doesn't expand on the original in a meaningful way.

Snake: Surprisingly better than the first, though annoying ass minions still bring it down. The characters are lot more fun this time around and its not really boring either, just really not my cup of tea in certain areas.

Ermine: Yikes... I didn't really enjoy the first movie so I thought that maybe perhaps the second one could bring it back a little bit. Unfortunately, my optimism only lead me to sheer disappointment. One thing I'll note is that at least the villain in this movie was better than the first. Another thing I'll note is that this movie is actually sort of alright when it's not trying to be funny or has Minions on the screen. The problem therein lies with the fact that only 5% of the movie doesn't have either of those two things. I'm watching this AFTER watching "Minions" and I have to be honest, they are actually somehow less annoying in their own movie for the most part and I don't even know how that's possible. Now Despicable Me 2 could have brought it back with its supporting characters and cast but honestly they all pretty much suck as well. All 3 of the girls are so god damned annoying, especially in the first half of the film and Lucy drove me insane as well. Fortunately, they tone it down a little bit as the film reaches its climax but not before making me hate each and every one of them. Also the whole date thing with Gru and trying to get him a girlfriend was one of the most frustratingly annoying things I've ever had to watch. If I could murder or brutally torture one character from this movie, it would definitely be Jillian or whatever her name was. Holy crap I want her dead.

The best thing about the damn movie is the little demon dog thing that they have and he's barely even in any scenes because they clearly needed more shittastic scenes with the Minions.

Overall just a complete disappointment, I don't know what I was expecting.

25. Robots

Ermine: 25
Inviso: 26
JONA: 28
red: 28

charon: A surprisingly well-aged treat from Blue Sky, this film's style and the world being fully robotic allow the early 2000's animation to hold up in remarkable fashion. I was hardly able to believe this still looked perfectly modern, given how poor 3D animation was at this time period. From a story standpoint, it doesn't do anything super original but I'm a fan of the format in which this story is laid out. The characters are all generally likable and the world of robots is pretty fascinating really. The moral of "you don't need materialistic things to live; be yourself" is a nice one and well carried by the cast here. There are some laugh out loud moments in this one too which honestly surprised me. The humor here is almost all pretty good. There are a few wild swings and misses, for me, but I've come to expect that from a lot of Robin Williams films. He's generally extremely funny but the film will almost always contain a scene or two that's cringeworthy. The voice cast, even without Williams, would have been an impressive list. I did find Halle Berry's character entirely pointless though, but it didn't take away from a pretty enjoyable experience.

Genny: I don't know if it's because I didn't really get it as a kid or if it's because I watched it with my sweetie and we had fun bouncing snippets off each other, but Robots' humor just clicked with me this time around. Even things that I remembered unfondly like Aunt Fanny and robot Genie didn't repulse me this time around. Rodney's an alright protagonist with big dreams I can't root against. Not sure how I feel about him ending up with Prettybot 3000, but whatever. Gatekeeper Tim was my favorite character, that hilarious little fuck.

Johnbobb: Part of the fun here is that it never bothers to question its own logic. Why do airport metal detectors exist in a world of all robots? Who knows, but its funny! Why does everyone travel in a giant Rube Goldberg machine that cant possibly be safe or functional? Who knows, but its fun to watch! Its not a deep movie. The villain is so unabashedly evil that he may as well have been named Robot Hitler. Still, its goofy and silly and legitimately funny.

scarlet: While the world is dazzling and there is a certain refreshing quality in how the story develops, the humor of the film is mired in a chewed up and processed script that feels like its been through three or four rewrites under three or four different writers.

Ermine: Yikes... I am a Robin Williams fan but it's hard to defend his role in this one. Not only was almost every joke in the movie completely un-funny, but it was so glaringly obvious that Fender's character was made to try and steal the show. "Just pop Robin Williams in there and the movie will be great!" That's really not how it works and this movie really makes that obvious. I also lost count of how many bad robot jokes were made in the first 10 minutes, ugh. Not to mention there was an fart joke that felt like it lasted over 5 minutes. Putting all the terrible jokes aside, the movie isn't that bad if you ignore the fact Bigweld had literally no reason to leave his company. Seriously, everyone except for maybe 2 people absolutely LOVE the guy so it makes absolutely no sense for him to leave. The reason they gave is bullshit because from what I saw, 99% of the damn robot population loves him and wants him back. Honestly, it really wouldn't have been difficult to actually give him a good motive, I don't understand the laziness here.

Wonderbot is great and is basically the only cute thing in this film. I'm glad they gave him enough attention and he pretty much took out the final boss on his own, what a trooper. I'm quite certain that Wonderbot is the only reason this movie isn't a good deal lower in my rankings but I'm probably being a bit too harsh on the film. It's honestly not THAT bad. It just has a few glaring issues that really stand out.

Inviso: Robots is a very standard movie. Its very safe. It tells a story thats not all that unusual. Super-inventor protagonist wants to get a job being a real inventor, rather than sticking around his hometown like a sap for his whole life. He goes to the big city only to find the company of his dreams has shut its doors at the behest of a cliched nineties businessman villain. With the help of some lovable misfits however, he saves the day and lives happily ever after. Like I said, this movie is rather clich. But the clichs work well enough and its enjoyable enough. I could do without Robin Williams hamming it up as hes wont to do, but whatever. Its decent.

JONA: I feel like the story had some potential with its social commentary, but it never really capitalizes on it and the movie had some pretty unfunny jokes.

red: We've got a lot of generic characters in these movies. Robots has, perhaps one of the most generic main character of all. Despite this, its kind of interesting how they made a world for robots and such, but beyond that the movie can fall anywhere from overly predictable to just plain boring. And sometimes the world itself is just impractical, such as a very early unnecessary travel sequence that is apparently a normal thing in the world. You also have a pretty inept villain and a cast surrounding him that seems to have no stake in the movie at all as they want to destroy their own world for some reason despite semeingly sharing the ideals of Bigweld or whatever his name was.

Snake: Surface-level consumerism commentary clashing with wide-eyed idealism is enough to hold your attention through a bland world that looks like Attack of the Clones had an ugly stepchild and some pretty gross looking characters (who are memorable nonetheless, Ill give them that). Certainly nothing terribly original.

Karo: Basically everyone is stupid looking robots from the 1950s or whatever who live in a world full of absurd mechanical contraptions that probably are supposed to be whimsical but are really just dumb. A young bot goes to the big city hoping to be an inventor and work for his hero, Bigweld, only to discover that everything isn't what he expected and gets caught up robot class warfare and robot ethnic (?) cleansing.

It is an off-brand animated movie, which means of course it has to end with everyone awkwardly singing and dancing to an awful pop song for little reason.
Robin Williams is in this movie as Fender the run-down robot, but I get the feeling that he is getting tired of playing animated sidekicks at this point as he gives a rather unmemorable performance here. It is really just a paint-by-numbers kind of CGI feature that is easily (and deservedly) forgotten.

Stifled: Hey guys. Robin Williams was really good as the Genie in Aladdin. Surely he can take our mostly uninteresting movie to the next level with his voice acting right??

Nope. He cant.

That isnt to say Robots didnt have a really unique world to experience. The slingshot thingy that tossed the robots around town was a fun set piece to watch, for example. But all of the characters in that world? Bland city.

Traviss opinion: He said the word robot a bunch of times, which was adorable.I think he liked it.
