17 y/o Lizzy Martinez caused quite a stir at school when students and administrators saw her show up NOT wearing a BRA as they told her to cover up her nipples with BAND-AIDS because she was distracting classmates!!

She didn't wear a bra under her gray long sleeve shirt when officials said she became the target of "other students" stares

The humiliation began when School Dean Violeta Velazquez called her into the office and Lizzy said she felt she was being bullied but the dean instead said SHE was the distraction

Lizzy says "She told me that i needed to put a shirt under my long sleeve shirt to try and "tighten" my breasts, to constrict them. And then she asked me to move around. Apparently the second shirt was not enough"

She was then sent to the nurses' office and they handed her 4 BAND AIDS and asked her to use them to cover up her offending breasts...that left Lizzy in tears.

The school district acknowledged what happened and wished they handled it better as they will now review situations like these for future preparation

But they also went on to say she VIOLATED the dress code by distracting other students and asked her to fix her violation as they are expected to dress appropriately for school and for the business of learning.

Provided the impact was equal? Sure. Speaking as a former horny teenager, though, I can tell you that my learning would suffer a whole lot less for being distracted by jiggly boobs than hers would be for having been pulled out of class entirely. Granted, I'm not a complete failure of a human being and I therefore didn't turn into a slavering, mindless zombie the instant I got slightly aroused, so maybe my experience can't be generalized here.

Can someone go to class naked? No, of course not.
Should they be forced to wear full business suits to class? Probably not.

There's a line to draw in between. That line is absolutely arbitrary by design, but it should exist and be clear (and be applied to all genders, of course. And yeah, because of difference in body types, it's going to be at least somewhat different for boys and girls). That's what a dress code is.

So it really comes down to: what is the dress code of that school. Did they say girls have to wear bras? If yes, and I think we can mostly agree that's not too crazy, then she should deal with it.

If not (I honestly never seen a school dress code that mandated it, so I'd be surprised if they mandated it), the school should apologize publicly and then shut the hell up. It's really that simple.

And yes, teenagers, including girls, have some trouble controlling their hormones. That's pretty normal and people should stop acting like it's a simple thing to do (if it was, abstinence-based education would work, but it doesn't. Why the double standard?). Girls shouldn't wear skimpy outfits and guys shouldn't be wearing tank tops. Though most people will probably agree what she's wearing in the picture is fine...but it really depends on the dress code.

Maybe one day someone can explain the logic as to why a man can show his nipples in public but a woman can't. Their the exact same thing. Sure a woman's breasts collect fat faster than a man's. But we've all seen man boobs that need a bra.

Not really. It's one thing if she weren't wearing a bra with a sheer shirt, or one that was loose enough to completely expose her boobs if she bent over the right way, but with a shirt like that? Not so much. Not everyone finds bras comfortable, especially when they're still growing and therefore might not even properly fit into the ones they've got (even ignoring how many women wear improperly-sized bras in general). Not all women even need bras.

Requiring a woman to wear a bra because you might see nipple imprints poking through her shirt is logically no different from requiring a guy to wear a cup because you might see a bulge in his pants. Heck, in some ways, it's even sillier than that, given that nipple erection can happen just because it's cold, whereas boners are purely sexual (morning wood excepted, but women also experience REM sleep arousal).

Whether it's simple or not, it's something you need to be able to do to function in society. The concept of protecting kids from being exposed to sexually attractive people until they're out of school is just ridiculous, and is one of the reasons so many people reach adulthood without properly understanding sexual consent. You get a boner in class? That's nice, but you've still got a test to write. If the presence of a sexy person means you can't function intellectually, and you really can't overcome that? Then that's a learning disability that needs to be identified and addressed as soon as possible, which also won't happen if you're sheltered from sexy people until you leave high school.
