She was there to remember the death of an unarmed black man at the hands of Sacramento police officers. But during the vigil for Stephon Clark, she was struck by a Sacramento County Sheriff Department vehicle.

The incident occurred on Saturday night. One video shared on Twitter shows people carrying signs of protest around sheriff vehicles. A voice on a megaphone says, "Back away from my vehicle" four times. Another voice can be heard saying, "Back away from my car" before the activist is knocked down to the curb.

The woman is identified as Wanda Cleveland, a 61-year-old with a previous medical condition, reported The State Hornet.

She fell on her hip and shoulder, hitting her head, and was taken to the hospital, said the Hornet. Cleveland had bruises on her arm and head but was released after midnight, The Sacramento Bee reported.

"He never even stopped. It was a hit and run. If I did that I'd be charged," Cleveland said in the hospital according The Sacramento Bee. "It's disregard for human life."

Outrage has been ongoing since Clark, an unarmed 22-year-old black man was killed by two Sacramento police officers in his grandparents' backyard on March 18. An autopsy report revealed that Clark was shot eight times, with most of the bullets striking his back.

His death has triggered anger across the city. Protestors stopped the flow of traffic on Interstate-5 and blocked thousands of spectators from entering into a Sacramento Kings basketball game.

After the collision, both vehicles were reported to have driven away, according to Capital Public Radio. Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Shaun Hampton texted to the radio station that their departure was prompted by "safety concerns."

"As protesters approached both of the marked vehicles, they began yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicles' exterior," Hampton told the station. One of the vehicle's windows was broken, said Hampton, "likely struck by a protester with an object."

Tanya Faison, founder of the Sacramento chapter of Black Lives Matter, said the organization stands in solidarity with the community. In an emailed statement, she said the authorities' departure after the incident was "another glaring example of the dehumanization of black lives by law enforcement; a state bodyguard intended to protect and serve."

A highway patrol officer told The New York Times that it was investigating a collision that occurred that night on the corner where the protest took place.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department could not immediately be reached for comment.

So she jumped in front of the second car to prevent it from keeping up with the first? Lovely...

At least that what it looks like from the video.

Damn right! Any other driver that intentionally runs over a protester gets charged, except perhaps the few states that passed laws allowing it in some cases (usually "fear for your life"), of which California definitely is not. Anyone who claims police are not above the law should demand this criminal be charged.

It really doesn't. Most prosecutors wouldn't bother filing charges on a case like this because of the fact that she joined others in swarming the car.

And welcome to criminals in America, where the death of a thieving, property destroying scumbag is the catalyst for mass civil unrest.

Just a messy situation all around, could have been handled better by everyone involved. They shouldnt have been crowding around cars with people inside like that but I feel like the officers just made things worse by trying to sound threatening.

Hard to tell from the video what actually happened when she is struck, they shouldnt have driven away but if they really were being attacked by a mob then I cant blame them for that part

Stuff like this just sucks because racial tensions are so high and things like this just put more fuel on the fire and divide everyone even more

it wont get better becaus groups like blm will NEVER admit a single police shooting is justified. theyd burn a city down in protest even if the person shot was caught on camera raping a child while shooting at police. easier to make excuses for why felons are actually not bad ppl instead of just admitting some ppl are shit.

Your outlook seems as extreme as theirs to be honest

Youre defining the entire group based on the worst of the bunch and putting the entire burden on them alone to ease tensions

I prefer civil unrest to an America where stealing and property theft is all you need to justify an execution.

problem is that there is no point at which groups like blm will say that a shooting is justified. idk why ppl have such a hard-on for protecting criminals tbh.

the group was literally formed as a response to some thug who was beating a police officer getting ventilated lol, they will never concede that a shooting is justified ever

He's not exactly wrong though. The eroding of personal responsibility in our society has resulted in people trying to excuse shitty behavior at any cost. The most popular modern scapegoats are mental health and poverty, for instance. Combine that with the outright refusal to admit that some people are just "broken" and cannot be fixed and you get groups like BLM protesting black criminals getting shot while committing crimes, while they never denounce the crimes being committed by the deceased.

The tricky thing about that is that there's almost no penalty for stealing, causing property damage, or being a general menace to society. Meanwhile, execution is almost entirely taken off the table as punishment for even the most heinous of crimes. We live in a society that increasingly cares more about the rights of criminals than the rights of the innocent and the endgame of that is going to be things like vigilante justice or outright anarchy.

Refusing to rid our society of the worst it has to offer is going to slowly cause our death.

Not sure why people still fuck around with cars after multiple warnings. It's also ironic in the sense that they're commemorating a death resulting from an attempt to flee a cop after a verbal warning.

Yeah, it would also just make the situation far, far worse if it devolved into mob attack and cops were prompted to use force.

Well, years later they're still repeating "Hands up, Don't shoot" despite Eric Holder debunking the claim surrounding Mike Brown. The truth doesn't generally matter to zealots, regardless of side.

Likely because most of the time it boils down to an officer encountering someone already committing a crime and refusing to comply with orders. Most police officers don't want to catch a bullet to the face and aren't afforded the luxury of time when it comes to choosing to shoot a criminal. 90+% of police shootings could be mitigated by the criminal just listening to the police, but they don't and get shot.

It doesn't help either that the shootings that any shootings that are indisputably justified get almost no coverage.

Which is why every country in the world that doesn't have the death penalty and doesn't routinely have cops killing people over petty crimes is overrun by criminals that have all but enslaved the law-abiding citizens, right?

Methinks this issue might be just a wee bit more complicated than the "bad guys should die" you're trying to turn it into. But then I guess that's par for the course as far as you go, so I can't be too surprised.

Many countries are on their way there, that's for sure.I think just in the news today a man in London was arrested because he stabbed a burglar during a struggle in his own home and the burglar died, for instance.

Or the guy who was ordered to take down his barbed wire fence because it might hurt burglars, just weeks after the same city council advised people not to lock their sheds because burglars might damage them.

And honestly, many places are becoming overrun with criminals because they know there's no real penalty or risk as long as you avoid certain crimes. The most popular one in my area is stealing and reselling things. All cash, no risk except for possibly getting a few hours in jail. As a bonus, they get to collect food stamps and medicaid at the expense of their victims!

And I must iterate again, slowly is the key word here. The "shrinking middle class" thing is a harsh reality largely because politicians continues to prioritize "helping" criminals and irresponsible morons on the dime of responsible, law-abiding citizens because it's a more effective way of garnering votes.

Methinks this issue might be just a wee bit more complicated than the "bad guys should die" you're trying to turn it into.

It's only "complicated" because irrational people make it that way so that they can feel like good people. Even the most heinous of criminals have people come to their defense. I just personally see no reason to keep murderers, rapists, and child rapists sheltered, healthy and fed when we could use those resources for other things.

It's so easy to not be a piece of shit, which is why I have no sympathy for criminals.
