50. Angel Beats! (2010)
TRE (1/5)
k7KyDni

An original anime, apparently not out of KyoAni, which Im just now finding out, Angel Beats functions a little differently from other Key works, which is probably why I like it a bit more overall. I liked the concept of this afterlife war where nobody would really die and the cycle just keeps going. The show was really damn funny to me in high school, but I dont exactly have too many memories of the comedy, so I doubt Id like it as much on repeat viewing.

I always found it weird that people say the ending is sad, so maybe I missed something? Its been nearly a decade so I cant be bothered to remember the details, but I remember it being happy, albeit powerful. I really enjoyed the major cast all around, and it feel like everyone got an ending they deserved, so that was really nice.

49. Kino's Journey (2003)
SeabassDebeste (2/4)
SIelOqX

Kino's Journey is the story of a young girl who travels the world, visiting various countries on her talking motorcycle. It's an episodic adventure that doesn't have much of an overarching plot, but it focuses more on atmosphere and worldbuilding.

I think the main thing that stuck out to me when I first watched this show was the overall feel. You don't see too many dramas take on an episodic format, especially one so barren in the comedy department as Kino. But it works really well, because of how the show presents itself. It can be somber at times and inspiring at others, and this is all thanks to some brilliant direction. As I said, atmosphere plays a huge role in this show's quality, and everything from art direction to music was fantastic. It sucks to have this so low, since I know I probably liked it more, but it's been so long that I barely remember a lot of the actual stories. I just know how my feelings toward the show were.

Though the new series kinda dropped the ball here. The original series was slow and a bit thick, at least it was when I was in high school. The new series tries to take on an entirely different atmosphere, where things stories are fast-paced and dark. It does a fantastic job at making things entertaining, but it loses all the charm of the original series in the process.

I thought Angel Beats was ok. Not terrible but also one of Key's weaker stories imo. (Clannad > Little Busters VN > Kanon (2006) > Little Busters anime > Angel Beats > Air, imo) Episode 3(?) was a top tier anime episode though imo.

Kino's Journey was solid. Agree with the atmosphere being the main positive point, though I think the stories/societies themselves are pretty interesting sometimes also. Still didn't watch the newer season.

48. Steins;Gate (2011)
Leonhart (5/5)
SbuzvQi

Steins;Gate is the story of a self-proclaimed mad scientist inadvertently inventing time travel. Through some amalgamation of electronic appliances, they can send text messages to the past in order to alter the flow of events. This is much lamer than throwing letters into the Bermuda Triangle, of course, but it makes for a pretty intense story.

The main failing of the show is it's first half. Steins;Gate is a slow burn, and so much of the first half is merely set-up for the crazy second cour. Unfortunately, it doesn't really do all that great of a job in pacing itself, and it results into something pretty damn boring. I actually dropped the show at first, but picked it back up after the hype machine worked it's magic. It's reliant on the concepts it brings up being intriguing, and one of the greatest vocal performances ever from Mamoru Miyano.

As for the actual meat of the show, it's another case where I have issues discussing, since it's been nearly a decade since I watched it. The second half is a significant increase in quality, however, with each episode filled with fun twists. One of the biggest effects the show had on me was the introduction to traps, and it made me realize I was a little gay. Thank God for anime, I guess. I am currently reading the visual novel, but I'm still in the first chapter. I think this format suits the opening better, but we'll see on my total thoughts!

47. Shomin Sample (2015)
Granzon (4/5)
6Toq7n9

In the year 2015, I didnt watch a whole lot of anime. I decided sometime after entering college that I wasnt all that into it anymore, and it wasnt until close to graduation where I found out about this dumb-sounding show about a dude who becomes a part of an experiment to keep privileged, sheltered girls from being scared of men once they become adults. Of course, hes only a part of this because the ones orchestrating the experiment believe him to be a homosexual, so he has to pretend hes gay in order to avoid having his dick cut off. Yes, thats the actual premise, and yes this is the show that got me back into anime.

Shomin Sample is bad. Im not going to try and explain to you why its secretly some masterpiece because nobody should actually enjoy a show like this. It offers up the most basic fanservice possible, the humor is crude, they spend the finale on saving a girl from an arranged marriage, which has become so played out at this point that anything with this plotline (except for School Rumble) should be removed from the world by force, and the characters are all standard shitty archetypical shells without originality. Karen is hot af though.

Anyway, I think I just watched this at the right time in my life. Anime had gotten stale for me, thanks in part to the Integrity era, and I barely watched anything for three years, missing out on a lot of cool stuff, but never having the drive to check them out. I dunno what drove me to check this out, but I think I just needed to watch some absolute smut to rejuvenate my interest, since it worked like a charm!

46. My Hero Academia (2016)
Maria (3/5)
0rr93SE

All things considered, MHA is pretty standard shounen fare in the premise. You have a loser main character whos an outcast due to his weakness, a jerk rival who is way more powerful, but extremely selfish, a teacher who sees the true potential of the loser main character, and works to draw out that power, etc. What sets it apart, to me, is the cast it has to work with, and the story potential currently being given to us.

A lot of shounens fall into the trap of becoming dull once the story begins kicking in, and the main character is at the forefront of every battle using the same techniques to finish off opponents. MHA has so far avoided this, though it is still pretty early in its lifespan comparatively speaking. Each student has unique powers, none of which feel truly drawn out at this point. In this most recent tournament arc, the main character loses in the second round, I think. I honestly couldnt tell who was going to win each match, and that was really fun for once, even if the end result was a little lame.

The plot is also getting pretty interesting. Stain is a cool villain because, despite his obviously incorrect actions, he presents a philosophy that does have weight. I mean, just look at what so many of these heroes are driven by: Money, fame, power, etc. Hell, even Urara only wants to be a hero for money. Sure, its to help her parents out so its not exactly selfish, but the idea of a hero in this society isnt exactly a symbol to look up to. Weve seen that even the most famous heroes can be complete scumbags with Enigma. This narrative theyre pushing now, with other powerful characters being motivated by Stains philosophy, has some real potential. I mean, Dekus always going to be a pure hero who opposes the methods of such a group, but it intrigues me to see how other characters will deal with such idealism.

Obviously, this isnt really a complete write-up and a lot of me talking about where I think it could go, since the show isnt even close to complete yet, and is actually in the middle of a season. Just know, I am eager to see whats ahead, even if the pacing has always been problematic.

45. FLCL (2000)
pyresword (4/5)
ekN3g26

FLCL is one of those shows that I doubt many people would like if it hadnt been one of the first things theyd seen in the anime world That may seem odd coming from a guy whos ranking this pretty highly, but thats just my theory, and I include myself among those people.

FLCL is fucking weird. Theres not really a better way to put it. The story doesnt really make sense, the animation is all over the place, the characters are all insane Really nothing in the show feels natural, which is the intent. Ive seen people talk about how this is actually a brilliant coming-of-age story, but aside from the massive growth that comes out of the protagonists forehead being an obvious boner metaphor, Im not really sure I see anything about that, though it has been a while. The story as a whole feels disconnected and difficult to follow.

But damn if it isnt entertaining. Ive watched it a couple of times through my life, though none recently, and its always been a full series binge. Yeah, its only six episodes, but its still impressive for a show to sit me down for three straight hours. The obvious appeals in FLCL are its wild animation and its soundtrack from The Pillows. I think my favorite part is the sequence where it shows the action through manga panels as the characters yell over it. Tons of fun. I'm not really all that excited for the sequels, however. Mainly, they seem unnecessary, and I don't even think many, if any, of the original staff members will be back. Who knows?

44. Kuroko's Basketball (2012)
SeabassDebeste (1/4)
Q7eDpuE

This is a show about basketball. Just some plain old teens playing some plain old sport. But they have super powers. If you're looking for a grounded piece of fiction about sports, Kuroko's Basketball is about as far away from what you'd want. The storytelling thrives on creating characters with skill levels that far surpass the physical and cognitive capabilities of a human. Sometimes these are just exaggerations of the necessary skills of a good basketball player, like a guy who can perfectly analyze trajectory and momentum to successfully make a shot from anywhere on the court. Other times, it has no ceiling able to stop the sheer lunacy of the writing, like a character who can steal the abilities of other players by looking at them.

It's hard to actually recommend Kuroko's Basketball While it wholeheartedly embraces it's outlandish nature, anyone looking for a show about sports is probably better suited with a show that can control itself. The author of this may very well have just spent the entire story designing characters around random concepts that popped into his head. As a sports anime, Kuroko is far too insane to work. However, as a superpower battle shounen, Kuroko is excellent. It's a sprawling underdog story about a random dude entering the fray in the same year that the best basketball players ever began high school. He teams up with a teammate of these players, who spent most of his time on the bench, and went unnoticed by the community at large. Seiren, the school of these two protagonists, isn't all that well known, but they slowly gain steam and begin to challenge the "Generation of Miracles". The pacing of the series is one of it's best aspects. Seiren never feel like their improving too quickly, and they have their fair share of losses. The Generation of Miracles is meant to feel unbeatable, and it does a damn fine job of presenting them as powerful.

Of course, animation is where the show excels. Everything is so smooth and beautiful. While the bright colors make the characters look like fujoshi bait, they compliment the quick movements well. Each time a player uses their power, it's accompanied by excellent art and sound design to really hammer in how significant the powers are. It makes for an experience that feels unlike any other (Though my sports anime backlog is high). Even matches that are ultimately there for filler are cool as shit, because there was no holding back on the presentation The show does fall prey to a ton of tropes, but they're ultimately forgivable in the end, since the rest is pretty damn good.

handsomeboy (2/5)

I didnt have Cartoon Network like all the cool kids when I was young. I did have WB-19, though, and I was also a massive Pokemon nerd, a title that still follows me to this day. So you bet your ass I was watching Pokemon every chance I could. Its a show that, looking back, is pretty bad. Its excruciatingly formulaic, with most of its episodes having no bearing on the overarching plot of Ash becoming a Pokemon Maser, which makes no sense because he hates keeping his Pokemon.

The thing is, Pokemon is so steeped in nostalgia that I dont really remember the flaws. Is that a problem? Probably. Should you be upset that Im not being critical of this show? Not at all. I wanted to post a bunch of my favorite moments from the show instead of doing a real write-up, but everything is in shitty montage videos. Just know that James is best boy and that the show went downhill once 4Kids lost the license. Oh, actually, they had all those JAMS. Heres my favs.

Clannad has a lot of mediocre in it, but it surrounds some amazing moments. Angel Beats is just pretty bad all around!

Good take on Kino's Journey. Pretty much agree with it entirely.

I actually liked Steins;Gate's first half more than its second. More fun to watch the slice-of-life type of effects of the microwave time machine, while being thoroughly confused by what's going on, than the more action-y stuff later on. Ending is pretty nice, though.

Couldn't follow FLCL at all. Like, at all. Felt like a waste of my time, sadly.

Kuroko's badness doesn't come from its unrealisticness, but rather from its lack of anything beyond the games. The characters were bad and there was no plot. Still fun to watch, but solely for the ridiculousness. That said, agreed with Mac about the best moment being the everybody-zone - well, that and Aomine's first move:

Pokemon is kind of delightful but also bloated as fuck with badness. Theme song was way better than watching the show (FMA 03 had some of this going on, too) in almost every episode except climactic battles that happened once in like a dozen episodes.

I had fun watching the original pokemon series a few years ago using a fan-made list to avoid "filler" episodes. I might have kept going if the ending wasn't so awful.

ash loses to richie because charizard is a lazy piece of shit. everyone talks about it after the fact like ash lost some hard fought battle and nobody even mentions he lost because of charizard. then richie loses to some absolute nobody who doesn't even have a name.

what were they thinking

42. Akira (1988)
Snake (4/5)
p3hQQ5e

Oddly enough, Akira is one of those all-time classics that put anime on the map in the west, yet I had never seen it until a couple of months ago. Does it hold that status to a first-time viewer in this day and age? Yeah, kinda!

I think the thing that impresses me most about Akira is how damn fine the animation is. I think I read somewhere that Akira was pretty much entirely hand-drawn, which is insane given some of the visuals they pull off. A lot of 80s anime just looks kinda gross nowadays, but Akira is so fluid. The scene where Tetsuo is transforming into the massive blob is still damn grotesque and I loved watching everything unfold.

The story itself doesnt hold up as well to me, though thats because later anime did similar things in better ways. The manga gives more context to the story, but its much denser, and Im not much for reading dense material, personally. I wouldnt say the film is required viewing, but its certainly a good way to spend two hours.

41. The Squid Girl (2010)
Roba (2/5)
QKX4mW1

Squid Girl is a slice of life comedy about a half-human/half-squid girl decides to invade and take over the Earth because of humanity's problematic ocean pollution. She begins this quest on a small tourist beach, but ends up working in a restaurant for the very humans she plans to rule. Of course, this is a valuable opportunity for research on the best ways to take over the human race, so she accepts her new position.

This is a pretty funny show. It's hard to write about comedy, so these write-ups always feel half-assed. I think it has a wonderful cast that all bounce off the titular character well. My favorites are Sanae, a girl with an extreme fondness of Squid Girl, to the point of obsession, and Chizuru, who gains superhuman strength when she's angry, which leads to Squid Girl abandoning certain plans of world domination. This is, of course, ignoring Squid Girl herself. Her entire personality is fantastic, and the show wouldn't work if it were much different. She's quite dumb and selfish, but the writing compliments these traits with the scenarios they tend to create. Another group of characters worth noting are the three idiot scientists. They don't appear a ton, but they basically just use their wealth of scientific knowledge to create completely pointless inventions. They're almost always funny.

I do remember not being all that crazy about the second season, however. I'm not sure if it was because it started to wear on me, or if the writing just dipped that much. I'd say the first season is among my favorites of this type of show, while season 2 bored me a bit. Monster girl SoL's are somewhat common now, but I'm not sure if any were all that popular before this. I mean, chances are I'm missing something obvious, but that's a neat little thought if not, I guess.

Squid Girl is a fun show, especially for all the squid puns! I agree that the side characters all played off of Squid Girl in fun, unique ways, too.
