To me generic design is like the usual oh Ive seen these 2 (or more) main character designs 100 times already this year

Say what you want about Fairy Tails art, but how many other shounen series star a guy with pink hair? You can probably count the number on one hand since pink is an incredibly uncommon hair color for guys in shounen

It takes more than pink hair, man. Generally Fairy Tail characters are just super boring.

Im pretty sure if you showed a picture of all the girls aside from Shinobu,
Blue hair (no idea what her name is) and maybe Mayoi to somebody who has never seen it they would assume they were sisters



You cant tell me most of them dont look pretty similar there. The only non-Monogatari art Ive seen from the artist is in Grisaia where he/she basically just copied designs for it

If you ever want to mock the story telling of Fairy Tail, simply realize that it was a hentai's plot, softcore porn levels of artwork, on something that was supposed to be a shounen. It was never actually good if you took the story to ever be better than Hentai levels.

That picture doesn't really look like the monogatari I watched.

I think the 5 girls that I know look pretty different, but it took me a bit to spot them there because the style is obscuring some of their more defining features.

also watched three episodes of school babysitters. I thought the first episode was pretty good but I just found 2 and 3 boring.

I'm still enjoying Babysitters a lot! I thought the absurdly fast development for the strict girl was weird, but everything else has been cute and fun.

Its not all about the hair color, but the other two very clearly stand out WAY more than the others and anybody who would argue otherwise is crazy. Like they stand out as much as an 800 pound person at anorexia gathering

Predix on how long HxH is back. I am gonna bank on 7 chapters before another 1-2 year hiatus. Togashi is literally gonna die of old age before he finishes the series at the rate he puts out chapters

Almost certainly just enough for another volume. This hiatus was only six months though, so maybe he's picking up motivation as this arc continues...!

That's exactly what I mean. HeroAca is a love letter to the shounen genre yet it still stands out entirely on It's a own with an incredibly well defined voice and design that makes it so no characters look even remotely similar yet you can still tell 100% at a glance that a character is from the manga/show.

I don't know about that.

I think MHA is pretty much the best example for a battle shonen that's broken new ground. Successfully enveloping western superhero comic influences into the genre like this hasn't really been done before like this. It also strikes a very...relatable tone that most shonens, even ones that take place in the real world, don't accomplish. For instance, Deku using his cell phone to share his location in a crisis is actually kind of mindblowing to see.

Is it blind hatred when I dont really even care about it anymore? I mean I just tried to bring it up as a counter example since its the closest thing with similar looking characters LtM likes that I could think of.

LtMs other thing about people immediately recognizing HeroAca characters applies to Fairy Tail too as far as Im concerned. The only similar characters are literally related to each other or look sorta like other characters hes drawn. I havent seen anything else the HeroAca guy has done if he even has done anything else at all so I cant really say if he has or hasnt drawn similar characters in previous series

HeroAca still has a lot of trope-y stuff built into its foundation though, even if it's just little things that add up like All Might's random blood spurts. But it all works together since the characters are all great (I mean Mineta is probably the closest to a bad character and even he gets some stuff)

Using imagination I would probably go with Anko or Kurenai. They were pretty fine so its a shame they hardly existed at all. Wouldnt even surprise me if a couple people said ..who? to them

I don't think using superficial tropes means you're not breaking new ground. Or even bigger tropes like "good triumps over evil" or "training/tournament arc" what have you.

Those are genre staples, but the way it's told and the way it...embraces being written in the latter 2010s makes a difference. It's not completely subversive the way HxH or something from ONE is, but you don't have to go that far to be considered a very fresh take on the genre I think.
