I was discovering little tidbits like this every time I played KHI for years.

Played more Bloodborne. Died a bunch more. But I beat two bosses so yay?

Cleric Beast and Gascoigne. Cleric Beast was the more difficult of the two for me. Ended up winning when I ran out of Blood Vials (HP Potions) on what was at that point my best attempt and was like "crap crap no i don't want to lose this attempt" so i just unloaded what consumables i had on it and just barely got it with my last one. Latter felt more fair but man sometimes (and this happened in both) it feels like you just get stunlocked by rapid attacks that land before you can recover and just die. Still not 100% sure how I won. I was actually surprised when I did. Think I landed some special move. That or it's scripted to have the final blow look cool if it's melee or whatever.

still not sure i have much idea of what i'm doing

Sometimes I feel like I'm not playing aggressively enough and so never can land hits. Other times I think I'm not playing defensively enough and am just getting smacked around. Haven't gotten used to the timing/invincibility frames/spacing of the dodges either even though most of my fighting involves spamming them.

Had to get a cavity filled today. It's such a strange sensation having half of your mouth numbed.

watching video of the game can help with this. I feel like the battles seem 100x faster while I'm playing the game and 100x slower than I remember when I'm rewatching footage of my own fights. also helps you spot and identify things like enemy attack patterns that are more subtle, things you couldn't pick up on while just playing casually.

here's me defeating gascoigne using only the blunderbuss.

as for the 'scripted' then you mentioned... it's possible you might have accidentally parried him and then killed him with a visceral attack? if you were using your gun at all then you might have triggered a parry by shooting him while he was mid attack. while he was knocked down, a normal attack would have triggered a visceral which is basically a critical hit that does a ton of bonus damage.

if you watch the vid you see me knock him down a lot, but I don't go in for the visceral attacks here because it's a gun only challenge

What's really strange is having your mouth numb to pain but still feeling the forces involved at yanking your teeth out

This was actually the first filling I've had done since I was a teenager, and the first dental work of any kind other than a cleaning since I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was like 20ish.

lol man that fight went a lot better than mine

I was getting better at picking up on his patterns after a few fights but there was a ton of room for improvement. I also was a bad judge at his range on a few moves. I do feel like I did learn quite a bit from tactics and stuff from watching that though, so thanks! Guess we'll see if I can put any of it into practice.

Probably. I was using it a lot at the end of the fight when I was frantically looking for ways to slow him down. This is likely what happened.

and if you want some analysis of my play there, a few things to note...

1. I should have been counter attacking more. even with the short range of the blunderbuss it's still relatively safe to blast him while he's off balance since he'll temporarily get staggered and give me a moment to retreat. I was trying to be too technical and fight with finesse but it ended up hurting me more than helping in the end. you can see a lot of moments where he'll do an attack or a combo and he's clearly off balance... then I just back away and wait patiently for his next attack. it's because I'm trying to line up parries. ideally even if I mess up and I'm not able to parry I should still shoot him at the end of his combo chain. you get some bonus counter damage and the more times I hit him the faster the fight would have ended.

2. his second phase is BY FAR the hardest phase. you can see this is where I'm on the ropes for most of the time, make the most errors, etc. a good explanation for why you won might be because the third and the first phase actually have a lot of common. his beast phase fights very similar to him with the one handed axe form, most of the combos have the same timing. he only has one delayed kick that is very tricky to deal with, and his forward leap requires good reaction timing and judgement to deal with. on the other hand, when he switches to the two handed axe it changes his fighting style completely mid battle and on top of that he has a ton of moves that are very tricky to deal with. anyway you can use the music box to make him automatically skip to his beast form. what I should have done was use the music box to prevent him from going into his second phase. I can pretty much guarantee that if I made him skip to the beast phase I would have put him down a lot more quickly and consistently. I know this because it's what I do when I fight him now, especially in challenge runs where there's little room for error.

Yeah, the 2H Axe phase was what was wrecking me most of the time. Either I'd screw up and die, or I'd get past it, but in pretty terrible shape that would lead to a death soon after.

it's pretty cool though since the attack patterns and timings of the third phase reflect the first phase. it's like, getting through the second phase is super difficult but once you can overcome that hurdle the muscle memory you've picked up from mastering his first phase allows you to do pretty well against the beast form despite it looking so different and being so intimidating.
