So I was looking for a new audiobook the other day (I listen to them a lot while I work since I'm in my car for approximately 5 hours), and I saw they were having a "First book in the series" sale. I scanned through it and my eyes happened upon a book called "Hyperion." It caught my attention solely because it's the book Nagato gives to Kyon at the beginning of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Got in a few hours today, and most of it was one guy explaining why he wanted to go to Hyperion. It was enough exposition to put even Kojima to shame. And apparently, all seven of the main characters are supposed to share their reasons! Is the entire first book going to be dedicated to this? Maybe so!

Hyperion is a standalone novel that later had sequels written to it. Unfortunately the sequels aren't quite as good, but Hyperion itself is quite good!

I thought the Fall of Hyperion was always intended to conclude the story. Hyperion is the best by far though.

But yes, it's the same book. I read a lot of sci-fi when I grew up, even before I watched any anime, and I was really happy to see references to a book I'd read recently. It made me think it was a smart show just from that.

Edit: In fact, the way Nagato is described and her relationship to Asakura and Kimidori is itself a reference to the AI factions in that book

All right, I'm finished with the 4th SNAFU book. The camp arc is one of the weaker ones, but it does introduce Rumi, who's pretty good, so I guess it balances out in the end.

Which is why it was good! The series is heavily focused on failure, so having easy successes the previous three books undermines that a little.

Yeah, that's a really good scene, too. Kloe makes a beeline for her and hugs her as soon as she sees her. They don't say much, but not much needed to be said there either.

Also, there's a really good conversation with Hans if you talk to him during the investigation at Jenis.

Forgot how good Stand Your Ground (FFXV's regular battle theme) is. Wanderlust is also a great song.

Anyway, finished Chapter 1 of Trails SC. I forgot how much shorter the chapters are here compared to FC. I'm glad we get Kloe back right away so she can be in my party forever. Speaking of which, I'm kind of surprised Bleublanc knows who Kloe really is but has no idea who Olivier really is.

Speaking of which, I'm kind of surprised

...Come to think of that, that is a bit surprising. I guess Bleublanc's excuse could be he doesn't really cross passes with Olivier until right then whereas he had been chilling in Ruan during FC at least, plus Kloe was a part of Richard's plan so to whatever extent Ouroboros was observing that they picked up on it. You'd imagine they did more intel work on Liberl than Erebonia since that's where they were working.

~~~
So what I had planned to do: Replay Tokyo Xanadu, get the platinum, then figure out what I was gonna do next.
What happened: I got really depressed, didn't want to do anything for a few days, then when I finally snapped out of it enough to do at least somethings I was like "eh maybe not" and started Bloodborne.
i died a lot then ate a skull or something and now a doll is talking to me
Never played a Souls game before so this should be an "adventure." As mentioned I have already died a lot. Though a good amount of them have been muscle memory from other games, particularly Tokyo Xanadu, screwing with me and getting me killed.
my favorite such instance:
What I meant to do: Hit the attack button. Go on about my day because it was a nothing battle.
What I did: Tried to throw a pebble at an enemy at point blank range, getting destroyed during the painfully long wind-up and throw animation.
Well, in Chapter 1, Bleublanc spoke to him like he had absolutely no idea who he was. He never even addresses him until Olivier laughs at his dumb notions of beauty. He asks for his name and pledges to remember it as the name of his newfound rival, so if he does know, he hid it very well. I can't imagine he has any reason to pretend not to know either.
Bleublanc's quests are fine. They're extremely easy when you're following a guide, so I haven't had much reason to get annoyed by them! As a character, he's whatever. He's evil Olivier with a cool design.
You know what's a really good sidequest though? The hidden one in Ruan after Chapter 1 in the hotel, where you have to solve the mystery of who assaulted someone and gather intel and talk to everyone. The guide talked about it like it was super annoying, but I loved it. I remember triggering that one on my first playthrough, too!
yeah this is another instance of this guide not being as thorough as the Trails FC guide
I got Gambler Jack Vol. 3 on the airship from Olivier, but the guide never said anything about where Vol. 2 was. Well, he's got all of that stuff compiled in a directory at the end (which is sort of inconvenient when I'm following it on a phone since I don't really want to flip back and forth), so I had to look it up there to find out it's a prize from the casino in Ruan. Hopefully, it'll still be available whenever I make it back there, but that's kind of annoying!
I do like that he has maps of every area showing where the treasures are, so that's one major advantage it has, but his descriptions could use a little more detail! I guess he just assumes you'll try out the casino, but I didn't really care for it the first time through, so I never bothered with it this time.
