for arc v: the standard dimention arc, the last third of the synchro dimention arc, the first 5-ish episodes of the xyz arc, and a few episodes of the fusion arc are top tier, the rest goes from a drag to garbage
I've kinda watched 5ds out of order, but it's amazing (though pre-wrgp, or at least pre-crash town is a drag, though I may have some crash town bias due to the 2011 WCs game for the DS), gx is pretty good too (though it can be annoying at times, and the handling of the cast is pretty ehh during seasons 2 and 3), 4kids went a bit too far with the edits for dm, but it's still very enjoyable, Zexal struggled a lot, but improved later on, though yuma's dub voice is the in..er...invoication of annoyance, haven't watched vrains or 0

The pre-DM manga (Season 0 was based on) is criminally under-rated.

It's basically supernatural horror death games all the way through with Yami dealing out poetic justice in the form of ironic curses. (You cheated at a card game? Now you're forced to hallucinate all those card characters eating you alive!)

Fun fact: the Yami v Bakura duel in Duelist Kingdom is technically filler, loosely adapted from a longer battle where Yami plays him in a DnD-esque battle game. (With the added benefit of proving non-evil Bakura exists lol)

And when it wasn't doing supernatural horror, it was crazy shit like "Joey pissed off a psychotic Bruce Lee fan, so he fights him with a nife in his teeth so if he punches Joey's face even slightly he'll freaking die"

It's 5D's. I know people are nostalgic for the original, and I am, too. But if you look at the series overall, the dark signers arc is far more sublime than anything the original has ever done, and it's not even close. 5D's has better duels, better characters (though Yusei can be a mary sue, I still like him cuz he has strategies outside just dueling), better animation, and better story than the original

I agree that Dark Signers arc is GOAT but doesn't it completely fizzle out after that? GX and original stand out to me more because their endings were hella great

For 5D's, the Crash Town arc is probably the best filler and the very last arc (sub only cuz 4kids skipped it due to lack of budget) is pretty excellent. The original also had garbage seasons and fillers before their final arc, which I think was definitely better than 5D's final arc. It's give or take, but I still think overall 5D's was better than the original, but it's close

Why would I favor pre Zexal 2 zexal? Yuma was a chump pre zexal 2. Although his ability was slightly less broken back then.

heartland WDC was pretty good tbh, especially later on
