This is an air fryer, for those who dont know. Theyre supposed to be a healthy alternative to fry cooking, using little or no oil at all. I didnt really care about the health aspect, tbh, I was more excited to be able to fry foods at home without having to dispose of the oil afterward.

Today I will be making fried pickles first, and then possibly some fried chicken and French fries. Im headed to the store now, will let you know how things are going once I start

If it works like a typical air fryer, it uses a halogen light and rather beefy fan, which just causes milk & egg and/or buttermilk batter to fly all over the place.

They're mostly intended for frozen foods. Burritos are great air-fried, once you figure out the optimal cook-time.

Good to know. I plan on using an egg batter for the pickles so we will see how it turns out. I wonder if I should do pickle spears and not chips like I had originally planned

Step one! Batter and bread. Couple eggs, little bit of milk. Some panko, garlic, parm, salt, pepper, paprika, and dill weed for the breading.

Here we go!

I like them but not for fried pickles. Stupid ass me.

Theyre in there now. 400 degrees, six minutes. After this I will be trying fried jalapeos in the same batter and breading

Hopefully I didnt get sweet jalapeos

Okay! Fried pickles are done!

savhqL2

Before.. six minutes later:

KiiFHoj

They were delicious! Would have been a million times better not as sweet pickles, but the flavor and the crispyness and the breading was great!

Next up, jalapeos!

rfyX1fl

Need a thicker batter for these next time. Breading didnt stick as well as with the pickles because theyre not wet.

Seriously? Try freaking french fries (or potatoes in some format).

Maybe mozzerella sticks?

How about making your own fried chicken or even chicken nuggets?.

Might be worth it if any of those come out really good. I do make them just fine with small amounts of oil on a pan (turned a few times throughout), so it's not messy or time consuming, and you have great control of the spices put on, crispyness etc.

Still, if you can just toss em in and forget em till it's done, that could be worth it.

Well.. yes. Kinda. But the air part is what makes it different. Think of a fryer with oil at 350 degrees. Completely surrounds the food because its a liquid. Now replace the oil with air at the exact same temperature and constantly move it around, doing the exact same thing but with no oil.

I just finished fried chicken. It was delicious. And crispier than baked fried chicken, more like a kfc type chicken.

I have three more cooking, I will get a pic when theyre done.

Thats the downfall of this thing. Way too small. Three pieces of chicken at a time is garbage.

I too am interested in French fries. Baked French fries are never as good as fried ones. If this thing can make French fries as good as fried ones, its worth it for that alone

That still sounds like an oven. I'm guessing the trick is that it moves the air fast enough that the air doesn't have a chance to cool down, but "chamber full of hot air that cooks food" is exactly how one could describe an oven.

To the confused people questioning how this works, no its not actually frying anything and yes its probably just a new tech cooking fad (they come and go every year or two)

See also; instant pot.

Americans just seem to hate actually cooking and try to find gizmos to get to the food faster, or easier, or healthier (instead of just eating healthy food)

I saw these at walmart before black friday for cheap. 30 bucks for cheapest model in store.

They also sold a 1.5qt deep fryer for 10 bucks.

If you want fried food actually learn to fry your foods. This thing is only good if you eat frozen chicken tendies on a regular basis...which actually this is potd so you might get your moneys worth.
