It's my favorite. Especially the slower, footsies based gameplay like Street Fighter.

Offensive, fast paced (usually with air dashes) are alright. 3D is alright. SSBM is great tho.

Never been a fan past the original mortal Kombat and that was just because the more was novel. Button mashing doesn't appeal to me.

I like them a lot, getting good at fighting games (like actually good enough to compete not beat your drunk friends up) is fun and soul crushing at the same time

I prefer anime style fighters but nothing will prevent me from playing slower fighters like SF. I also like 3D fighters and I enjoyed Tekken 7 quite a bit

I think they're boring as hell.

They're the perfect example of what happens when a genre caters to top-level play. Everything becomes stale if you aren't in on all these hidden, unintuitive mechanics. Then once you learn them the game doesn't even feel like you're actually fighting. The game feels like you're in some kind of competitive rhythm game.

It's hard to be motivated to get good at them since the 90's ended, arcades basically died and people just got over them.

When it was a craze, it seemed like everyone everywhere was discussing the new SF or MK and going on about how to do the combos and everything else.

I used to love them back when I was ignorant to the intricacies of the systems. Learns all the combos, pull them all out all the time.

Competitive fighting game playing is boring when you really get into it. Learn one combo, find a weakness in the opponents defense, then spam that one combo.

I got really good at beating up mid tier players on marvel vs Capcom 3. Getting beat by the top tier players didn't even bother me. It just got boring realizing that everyone was doing the same thing.

Soul Calibur and Smash are my main two, and I'm good enough at those to do well in public online play (I'd say I win over 60% of my fights) but not good enough to enter tournaments. I only recently got into Tekken (when I gave into despair earlier this year and lost faith that SC6 would happen) and Pokken was pretty neat too.

I prefer slower mechanics and not fast dial-a-combo games (but they're fun to watch). I'm very much a casual player, though, and I can't stand most of the negative attitudes of the FGC.

Mostly I just watch Maximilian these days (with chat on, shine on) or catch a NLBC (with chat off), screw around with a game or two, mostly go vs CPU, and then go back to Third Strike.

Well said. Games with stronger neutral emphasis are more fun because you are actively making decisions every second by poking, spacing, and conditioning. For air-dashers, you are either getting pressured or mashing a string.

https://track6.mixtape.moe/wbjznc.mp4

SF doesn't look as flashy compared to air-dashers, but the intricate meta game that goes on is a real spectacle if you can appreciate it

This does not apply to many fighting games, like at all. In anime fighters it's not learn one combo lol gg u win. No good player is getting opened up off of the same combo over and over. In anime fighters you generally have standing, crouch, counter hit, air and special routes you can take of varying routes depending on your resources. In 3D fighters you have strings you can learn that are dependent on the character you're facing due to their reach, weight, and size. Even for a slower paced game like SFV your example doesn't apply, you have different combo routes you'd use off of different confirms and the actual footsies is intense as fuck

You could try your hand at KOFXIV, it's slightly faster than SFV but still has hardcore footsies, and it's way more mechanically complex

There's that Fighting Layer Ex Demo that I've heard a SF friend compare to it, so you can give that a shot too

That's exactly the game it was modeled after. One of the people who made it was a competitive Marvel player for years and wanted to keep part of the game alive even as its community and its hardware kind of aged out. Several mechanics in Skullgirls are actually direct responses to similar or lacking mechanics in Marvel, the most obvious of which is the system that monitors loops in combo strings to prevent infinite combos.

Love spectating. I'm a fan of most of the mainstream fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, MvC, and so on. But because of that, and lack of time, I've only played one or two games in each series.

Smash is the only platformer fighter that I've played every iteration of. Others, like Rivals of Aether or Brawlhalla, don't interest me.

I love fighting games and am very happy you brought this topic up.

With the release of Tekken 7, Street Fighter 5 and MvCi, people are out raging hard about missing characters. My basic logic is that they always drop some characters in a new title and add new ones in fighting games. They've been doing this shit since Street Fighter 1 and Mortal Kombat 1. So like when Lei and Anna isn't in Tekken 7 everyone is having the biggest fucking meltdown in the fucking world. Opinions and comments and reasons why people are like?

I agree with this. I can enjoy them a bit when I'm playing with other casual players, but against better players, I just don't think its all that fun. I remember when Mortal Kombat X came out, I tried it out with a few of my friends and they were becoming pretty decent, but they became mainly focused on learning long combos and stuff. Personally, I just don't like having to memorize long button strings, I have more fun when playing at a basic level and not having to think about combos or anything like that.

I had a lot of fun putting some serious effort into learning Hakumen, and reaching a point where I could take on tournament players like Kizzie Kay or Beta Dude makes me feel awesome

But that awesome feeling becomes exhausting when trying to play other characters. Starting from the very beginning to learn entirely new combos and matchups (which are millions in BlazBlue) and not being even half as effective with them, it now feels awful and you just want to quit trying.

DBFZ and BlazBlue Cross Tag battle will do great things for casual play. May even revolutionize the genre. Just pick a team of characters and go wild, not spending thousands of hours just to get good with someone.

Ya but the fundamentals, execution level you gain, and general matchup knowledge (blockstrings, mixups) still carry over to a new character you use, so it's nowhere bad as when you very first started off

BlazBlue is too gimmicky for fundamentals to be important, and Hakumen being a low execution character moving onto crazy girls like Rachel or Taokaka is an insane jump(especially online). I'd like to be just as good with them as I am with Hakumen but that's just not possible
