I will say once I had the fourth party member and I really started to have access to everything the battle system has to offer my enjoyment of this game went up tenfold

Since I've restarted, I've noticed I'm pulling rare blades a lot more frequently. I know they're sort of front-loaded, but I've gotten 7 so far off of probably less than 100 core crystals so far (currently close to the end of chapter 3).

I wonder if this is just because I've been paying closer to my affinity charts more, so Rex and Nia have higher idea cloud levels?

The thinking seems to be that your rates of pulling are much higher the more unpulled rare blades you have.

It's my belief that this is only because the pool of Rares to draw from shrinks. For example if each Rare has a draw rate of 1%, you're going to have a 20% chance of drawing a Rare at the beginning. There's a big difference between 20% and 1%.

I know there are way more variables, I'm just keeping it simple here.

I get that, but still, I only had around 7 rare blades in my original playthrough and I opened hundreds of core crystals.

I wish this stuff was surfaced a little bit better.

i think I've now pulled about 100 common cores and 20 rare cores, got not a single rare blade.

i have 22 rare blades including story lol

There seem to be some downright Final Fantasy VIII levels of "this gameplay mechanic actually works in such-and-such a way, and best practice won't seem apparent based on what little the game seems to suggest".

Kind of fascinating to watch it happen as players figure that shite out for the first time.

you guys i just got to early ch5 fonsettand leveled my entire party 5 or 6 levels using exp from grinding merc missions

im level 54-57and the "tough" path enemies on the alternate path for this continent are a good 10 levels below. the recommended path enemies are 20 levels below lol

54-57 is like end of Chapter 7 levels, so good job!

I'm in the upper 60s, just finished chapter 9.

After chapter 7, this game does a good job of making you feel like a boss, but still able to be caught off guard by the occasional boss.

Since becoming overleveled the only bosses that really give me trouble are the ones that randomly have spike damage. But I've never been able to tell when an enemy is doing spike damage so it just happens and I die.

I agree with this. I have no idea why I suddenly die.

Haven't actually started exploring chapter 5 yet just been doing side quests in previous areas

I stopped using bonus xp outright since I was getting too overleveled. I feel like that's there for players who might get stuck and need to be overleveled to get past certain battles. But I feel like I don't even have enough time to set up combos so I don't find it fun.

I was using bonus XP for a while just so I could kill the HP sponge enemies faster. But now fighting is a lot more fun so I don't use it. I sometimes even get disappointed when I kill an enemy too quickly.

I would be okay with that if the game had normal enemy progression but I want to be able to kill those level 80 monkeys and level 90 dinosaurs as quickly as possible

I am not aware of any feature that you can use to lower your own level.

Annoying noob checking in. I haven't played one second of this or X, but I consider the original Xenoblade a top 10 game. Without spoilers, what's the very general consensus on this game as it relates to the original? I read the other topic complaining about "gacha" crap and it seems... eh.

the gacha system isn't great and or made easy to use, but I'm still really enjoying the actual game a ton

Exploration, story, and characters are all great. Battle system is also great, but for many it takes awhile before it really clicks. It's mostly just the blade gacha and other UI issues that are annoying.

The characters are story are solid. The cutscenes are very well done. The battle interface is a step up from Xenoblade 1 and combat feels good in general. The world is big and there are lots of quests to do.

The gacha system is definitely a turn off to a lot of people. You can get a fair number of the Rare Blade without too much trouble but rarity seems to increase as you collect more of them. As a result it takes a long time to get all of them. There are also quests attached to each Rare Blade. On one hand it's cool that you actually get to interact with them but it also means that if you don't get them from the gacha you do miss out on actual content.

There menu system is close to being good but there are some strange decisions that make it harder to use than it should. Like when scrolling through all of your equipment or Blades you'll wish there were better sorting options than there are. There are also other things in the game that cause you to have to visit the menu a bit often which can hurt the flow of the game.

Its just as addicting as XC1 if not more, same with the music. 1 has the better story and setting so I think it will still reign supreme. I also prefer 1s more melancholy tone compared to 2 which is more lighthearted. Still an excellent game. It does suck that some Blades (supporting party members) are so hard to get through the gacha system.

So, I rolled three Healers on Morag, and haven't rolled any with Nia, though I did give her Vess. Should I Overdrive one of Floren/Ursula/Nim over to Nia? Which is the best healer?

Nim is really good. Ursula is too, but her quest is the worst.

Ursula's quest is a good way to raise common Blades to get WP items. I'm still running it constantly even through I got her to A rank a long time ago. One problem with this is it also means I can never user her in an actual battle.

My nightmare right now is that I finally use Ursula in battle and she still uses the URSULA'S NEW GROOVE voice line

It's actually faster if you get one to 99 first. It unlocks more of the bonus concert missions or something that'll push you over the 5000 fan limit faster.

I've been switching back and forth between JP and English voices, and both tracks are mostly pretty great. Ursula's existence forces me to use JP though. I hate her Merc Mission voice lines so much.

I ended up with a Common Blade that has the Orb Master V Battle skill. It's pretty cool. What it does is make every hit in a Blade Combo generate an Orb (if there isn't already an Orb of that element). Furthermore, the effect is party wide for some reason. So if the Lv1, Lv2 and Lv3 Specials are 3 different elements I get 3 Orbs. I can pretty much set up an 8 Orb Full Burst in two and a half Blade combos.

That's pretty cool.

So in Chapter 8 and I've been able to finish every rare Blade's quest except Gorg's because he needs an item from next chapter I think. And Adenine's and Floren's quests are still ???. I'm not sure if that's because they start later or if I haven't done every pre-requisite for them or something. I got the three tomes and did the three merc missions for Adenine, and I've got Floren's charm to level 4.

And of course there's KOS-MOS still lol.

I think you can do Floren's quest in the current chapter but there is still something you need to do to unlock it.

The one I have is an Electric type 4* Twin Rings Blade that also came with Recharge Boost.

I'm down to just two more 5* Blades. Supposedly this is where there's a difficulty spike in getting more 5* Blades. So far I think I've been pretty lucky. I've very rarely gone over 20 Cores without drawing a new 5* and that was usually when I was using Common cores. I've got a 999 Luck set up and Lv10 Justice so hopefully I only need 200-300 more Legendary Cores to finish this up.

at that point the audio started freaking out and he just stood still and let me hit him until he died and which point the audio freakouts ended

yeah this fight was really fucking annoying with the narrow area, his ability to reflect knockback attacks, and that goddamn bird

yeah I have to say fighting in narrow spaces was part of what I didn't love about this game. When you're fighting something that takes 15 minutes to beat, and you get knocked off a ledge, it doesn't feel like a fair loss.

Just another way to fluff up game time I bet, with how many high level enemies there are in narrow places in this game.

The narrow area was actually to my advantage when I fought Myrmidon Eugene. I think I was under his level and ended up knocking him off the area to win.

It actually annoys me because I don't want to knock the enemy to their death and miss out on their sweet loot.
