I can agree with that. I kind of ignore it in my liking of Kuja.

Both of these for me. It is lame but eh, there's still the other 95% of his story where he is unrepentant and cool.

Well it's a real shame I just hope next year FFIX will do better, especially Garnet that was the first sign of the downfall

I know factors are not a thing in this contest, hence characters like Minwu becoming super popular out of nowhere
But I still believed that after FFIX got ported FOR THE FIRST TIME to a modern console, maybe it would increase the playrate - even if by just one person that decided to save FFIX characters because of it, it would make a big difference
But it didn't, and it was FFIX worst year recently (at least I think it was)
So..meh

A FF9 fan once told me they hated Amarant because he felt so out of place. Like you have this magical and whimsical world and then Amarant is just sorta sitting back, arms crossed, clashing with the overall feel of the story and not giving a damn if he offends you while doing it.

I dunno if most FF9 fans who dislike him feel this way but having that image of him in my head almost makes me enjoy him more (though he'd be one of the higher ups for me either way-- liked his skillset and as characters very little of the cast does anything for me)

I agree, but I also feel the same way about Vaan (substitute abs for hair), and lots of people hate him.

(people like FFD, who actually hate the abs, don't count)

Amarant is just lame. He doesn't really show up until like halfway through the game and has zero discernible impact on anything.

That 8th party member could have been Beatrix, but we got stuck with his stupid ass.

Yeah its basically this for me. Vaans Flaw is that hes the protagonist in his game, and in a series with a recent string full of strong leads so his lack of presence becomes more prominent when you compare him to a Cloud or Tidus. Im sure if Amarant was the lead in his game, way more people would resent him.

Vaan would also probably be a bit more forgivable if XII was intended to be a throwback to classic FFs ala IX, or if his design was good. Unfortunately, neither is the case.

I guess I just don't ascribe much importance to the "protagonist" label. The main character is rarely my favorite (Cloud is the only FF protag who is my favorite in the cast), so I don't have a lot of expectations.

But also, I don't think Vaan is the protagonist in any meaningful sense of the word. He's a minor character with a severely underdeveloped story arc, who just happens to be the POV character for the first couple hours. That's about it.

I guess I just don't ascribe much importance to the "protagonist" label. The main character is rarely my favorite (Cloud is the only FF protag who is my favorite in the cast), so I don't have a lot of expectations.

Eh, Vaan is POV and you see the entire storyline through his eyes, and he's essentially an avatar character. He's not relevant to the plot, but I don't know if that's even necesary for video game protagonists in the first place

As long as you realize they basically just set out to recreate Cloud in every game, i am fine with it.
