I've read a few thousand books so a top three is difficult to come up with.

If on a Winters Night a Traveller is always in my top five though.

I'm only forty pages into The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and loving it.

I like Philip K Dick as a writer but one single book of his wouldn't make my top fifty.

Buk and Miller are great and so are Mailer and Auster.

Then there is Vonnegut and Swift killing it with satire.

Celine with his ultimate pessimism.

Nabokov with his crisp derision.

Throw in a couple of Rushdies and Roths.

So, so many others... Fante, Camus, Nerrsasian, Saramago

LoTR series
Harry Potter series
The Black Cauldron

I really neeed to read more especially since I'm planning to be an author myself. Some honorable mentions include:

Eragon/Inheritance Cycle - As much as I liked the books I had a few issues which prevent it from being a top pick.
Six Wakes - Pretty intriguing concept.
Dragon's Blood and Heart's Blood - Read these a long time ago and only just recently realized there was actually four books in the series.
Dragon of the Lost Sea series - Really enjoyed these. Easily top 20.

Or they just make movies (and television shows) from books ULTRA fast these days. The only book I can remember reading before I found out about the movie was Firestarter.
