Everyone now has a smartphone and/or computer, right? Just download Spotify. If you like the radio because it's cheap, you can just go with the free option. The commercial breaks are way shorter and you don't have to listen to dumbfuck DJs. Or get whatever streaming app; I don't know much about anything else, but I assume most of them are still a better alternative to radio.

Of course, you need something to play it on, but car stereos not having aux/USB/Bluetooth is pretty much the only reasonable obstacle at this point. Even then, I'll still see people listen to the radio on a (home or car) stereo that can connect to external devices, which boggles my mind

Because it is more simple?
Because they got no problem with the DJ?
Because they are no special snowflakes that must listen to that specific song right now?

Why did people keep listen to radio even if they could keep repeating their favorite songs on LP, MC, Minidisc, MP3 Player, a dozen or so other formats, etc?

Because stereos that supported those kind of things weren't as ubiquitous. Nowadays I don't think you can even get an aftermarket car stereo without some kind of external device connectivity, and that kind of thing is becoming standard in stock car stereos too.

Also, back then it was harder to find better music. You had to actually go buy albums so I imagine most people would just buy stuff from bands they already heard on the radio just to be safe. You could dive deeper, like asking a record store clerk and listening in store before you bought it, but that isn't nearly as convenient as streaming a song to see if you like it. Digital music also allows artists who don't have the resources to put physical products in stores to get more exposure.

But I guess you had to be there to get it.

My car was too old to have an aux port but not old enough to have a tape player :(

But whatever, the $200 or so I spent getting a new stereo and having it installed was money very well spent. And IIRC they'll put the stock stereo back in for free and then I can use my aftermarket stereo in my next car. Might have to pay for that installation though and chances are I won't even need it by the time I get my next car

My car doesn't have an aux/Bluetooth so I bought a little device that plugs into the car charger port and lets you use an aux. It's static-y at times though so I'm probably just gonna save up to have a new stereo installed. Some people don't have the $200 to spend on something like that.

Also @DirtBasedSoap, my friend had one of those.

Personally, I usually listen to podcast or my own music, but I do switch to Pandora every once in a while(comedy or music depending on what I'm in the mode for). But if my phone starts to have connectivity issues, I sometimes switch to radio. It's not like it's that bad. And I use to like some of the DJs they had in the morning.

It's more technical than that, you put in the data plug in the back of the cd player in the device which bluetooth/aux to your phone. It makes your car believe your phone is the CD player so avoids the lossiness from a tape adapter or even CDs in general.

Welcome to my car. I burn mix CDs because the sound system is great and I just don't like the radio

Also streaming like Spotify uses data (it can be a lot in a hurry) and that's not an option for everyone with a smart device. Many areas I drive to are also totally without wireless data service. You could pre download music for sure if you pay for premium but I don't always remember.

The two stations i mainly put in is a college radio station and an another station that is kinda like a college radio station but with actual production values. I dont often listen to the best of the 80s, 90s and today or pop/rock stations because they just play the same hundred singles over and over again. im tired of hearing red hot chili peppers or JEREMIAH WAS A BULLFROG DUH NUH NUH because its just the same stuff ive heard hundreds if not thousands of times without ever once seeking it out.
