They have an annual subscription that amounts for like $7 a month now, how long do they expect to stay in business?

It's not. They're taking heavy losses to build a userbase, then going to leverage that base for lower prices from theaters/jack up their price.

Until their seed money runs out, at which point they'll have amassed enough subscribers to strong-arm movie theaters into paying them a fee.

I hear theaters make most of their money in concessions.

When you basically see a movie for free (if you have this youre essentially paying change for each showing), people should be more willing to spend their money on overpriced popcorn and candy.

I feel like theaters should be totally down with this, as it would encourage people to actually show up at the theater more. But idk.

As mentioned earlier they're probably hoping to make more money from concessions. That's where theatres make most of their money anyway.

They're backed by venture capitalists with billions who expect to take a loss for years while they build a subscriber base.

Basically none of the big tech startups are profitable

Theaters don't make jack off of the tickets, their real profit is in the food and drinks being sold.

it isn't unheard of. IIRC ridesharing companies are also not making a profit for more or less the same reason

I mean, you have to use the card to get a ticket, which means the cinema companies can track which tickets were made with a MoviePass and which weren't. Based on that maybe they give a kickback to MoviePass?

I also imagine that they're relying on people only going to one movie a month, if that.

Even if you went to one movie a month it's still a net loss for them.
