iirc most billionaires including trump and the newest richest person in the world jeff bezos of amazon have chosen not to sign gates's giving pledge....

......which states that the person will give over 50 perc. of their fortune away to charities, probably after they pass. But gates and buffet have gone further and pledged to give away 99 perc. of their fortunes away. iirc gates would still be the richest person in the world if he didn't give away 30 bil. or so to charity.

Honestly anything I earned over, say, $10 million in savings I'd give away - most to various charities, maybe some to organizations I like, help out my friends and family, etc.

A person only needs so much money. If I ever found myself in a situation where my net worth was in the billions, I would consider it a failing on my part.

I'd imagine I would. Like darkknight109 suggested, one only needs so much money in life to experience and enjoy everything. If I have children I would leave them something to live a comfortable life but only enough that they still need to be smart about. What's the point of trying to teach a child the value of money and savings if I spoil the hell out of them and give them so much that they can throw it around and not make a dent in their wallet.

He was until a couple weeks ago when Bezos passed him. They are still pretty close though and if Gates hadn't donated a huge chunk of MSFT stock to his foundation he'd be pretty solidly in the number one spot.

I probably wouldn't sign the pledge because I don't feel any need to have some big Promise hanging over my head just to do what I'd want to do anyway.

But I would very much pick and choose what I gave money away to. I wouldn't just give it away willy nilly to reach some set goal. I'd probably mostly donate to things that personally interest me. Give no kill cat shelters enough money to keep them running for decades, give money to people who are ill so they can pay for their medical treatments, things like that. :P

Probably not, because the wealth is better used in my family. Granted, they might be doing this as a write-off against inheritance taxes which, tbh, I'm rather see my money go to a charity than the government.

I wouldn't feel the need to sign a pledge in order to do whatever I feel is right.
I'm not sure why Bill Gates needs a pledge or why anyone else should feel obligated to sign it

I remember when prom was occurring and we had a Senior named Antoinette who walked around with a pledge that she wanted all the Seniors to sign stating that we wouldn't drink on prom night.
She was so smug and sanctimonious about the whole thing, wagging her finger in front of us and telling us in front of administration that we couldn't drink and how she was holding us to the pledge.

As a result I refused to sign it, and told her I don't need a pledge to do the right thing.
She got whiny and squealing but I kept walking around her after that every time I saw her in the hallways.

Of course not, and all the naive people who fall for that guys philanthropy scheme make me sick. He's doing things like this to boost his image. A pledge (not contract) to give away your money after your death to a "good cause" means absolutely nothing; anyone can say that. Just look at the investments he made through the years and the "gifts" he did that benefitted mostly him (in the moneymaking department). None of those were philanthropic and the net benefit was more harmful than helpful.
