You joke about those, but I can't tell you how many old white people who specifically ask me "Oh, are you the first person to graduate high school and go to college?" when I'm in a whole group of people. And they only ever ask me.

Just as bad is the "Where are you from?" question that same demographic always asks me. What they really want to know is my ethnicity, but they know it's rude and weird to ask that but then essentially ask it anyway. I always lead those people around, because after I say I'm from PA, then they ask where my parents are from, then my grandparents, then my GREAT grandparents. It's funny how far they'll go just to find out I'm Hispanic.

Im like 99% sure that the term micro aggression is less than 10 years old. Maybe like 5 or 6. At least as far as it being used in pop culture all the time.

And what, are we not allowed to discuss old ideas?

Then... why don't they just ask? Just ask me "What's your ethnicity," instead of holding me hostage for 2 minutes while trying to pry it out of me.

It's still a rude question (because how many white American people get asked "where are you from?") but I'd at least respect you more if you went out and said it. They could even phrase it slightly better like "You look like my friend from Guatamala. By any chance, you don't happen to also be there, right?" Like... even if they obviously lied about having that friend, the fact that they were conscious enough about it makes it less intrusive.

I dunno. @RCtheWSBC, I know we're not, like super good friends or anything, but you've spent more time in academia than I. Have you experienced something like this before? I'm not wrong to be pissed after the 10th time I get asked, right?

It's not even about that. It's about this demographic (old white people) asking me where I'm from, and then not asking any of the white people around me that same question.

It's rude as shit. Same as the college thing I brought up earlier.

Like, this didn't even happen only once or twice through my college career. I experienced this shit once a month back in college.

But then why didn't they ask any of the white people around me?

One of my friends is apparently something called Black Irish (he's half Hispanic but is pale as shit and actively presents himself as a white person, so you wouldn't know unless you looked at his mom's maiden name). That friend apparently has Viking ancestors and has some documentation backing it up. By all means he has a MUCH more interesting family history than me. Why didn't she say, "and you. What about you, tell me about YOUR family history."

It's a dumb thing old white people do to determine if you're Mexican/Arab/WHatever, and I literally experienced this TO MY FACE more than a dozen times, and you want to tell me that I interpreted it wrong? Gtfo

Then don't ask "Where are you from?" because from the gate it implies that individual isn't a "native", lol. The curiosity is fair, but how you communicate those ideas can come off either genuine or tone-deaf.

I mean, whenever someone asks me where I'm from I say Florida. No one has ever followed up with, "no...where are you from?" or something like that. It's happened to colleagues of mine over the years, particularly if they do have international backgrounds--usually either they are first-generation born Americans or emigrated with their families at a young age.

But, what do you get out of finding out I'm Puerto Rican and then nodding your head and going "Very nice!" Asking me what my heritage is isn't an ice breaker question and CERTIANLY shouldn't be the first thing you ask someone who isn't white. It's cyclic. PC was a pretty big thing in the 90s.

In fact, a large part of why "PC" became such a dirty word that current day social progressives refuse to use it for themselves was because of how poorly received the movement was in the 90s.

But yeah, Internet social culture in general revived the idea with a vengeance over the last decade or so. That's what happens when you put a bunch of children in a sandbox without any adults to watch over them or spank them when they're naughty.
