He worked in the meat department. He quit on the spot.

I still wouldn't waste my money on lottery tickets, but I guess if you're working a dead end job with no end I can see it.

He'll be back in two years lol.

I don't gamble, since 99.99% of the people who do so, end up putting more money into that voluntary tax system than receiving any of it.

Plus they tax you for winning big money because it's "income".

True if your employer tries to fight it.

You have to find a way to get fired that doesn't make you look like someone that doesn't want to work.

I would just straight up quit job #2 if I won a million. Job #1 if I could get something going with the money.

I did the math, and he's been buying lottery tickets for the last 25 years every day.

So that's $20 a day * 365 * 25 ~= $150,000. I guess that's somewhat worth it. The problem is he'll probably be back in two years. I should ask our manager if she's going to take him back in two years lol. It's probably not as much money as he thinks it is.

I should add that, unfortunately, Colorado is one of those states where the winners are publicized. Well... at least jackpot winners. I don't know, maybe one prize below the jackpot is the way to go, assuming that doesn't get publicized. But I have no idea why that law even exists in the first place, especially with there being a precedent in other states that respect your privacy, where I assume the lottery works fine.

I say that because that's actually what happens to most lottery winners. They overestimate how much money they actually have. He doesn't seem like the brightest bulb, so I wouldn't have too much faith about that.

Like he's going to invest that, lol.

you can hire financial advisors to tell you everything you need to do. don't need to be smart to invest properly. do a bit of initial busywork and the money will sit there, forever, collecting enough interest for you to live comfortably without ever touching the principal. my grandmother has done it for years on less than two million

not saying this dude has anyone telling him not to be stupid about it, but, it's very very easy to not be stupid about wealth. and the window for not having to work another day in your life is lower than people think (if you don't need a life of total opulence).

Well, that's enough to live as if you have 7 figure income for the rest of your life. That's actually pretty good. He only won a million as I heard later today, which is enough to get by on $20,000 a year, but again, people who win lotteries tend to not be the most financially smart people. He's probably going to go out and buy a really nice car and house.

Not that I'm jealous or anything, I hope he doesn't.

Yeah I think he tried to sound smart but it sounded stupid instead. And saying you didn't win the lottery sounds like you played it anyways and still lost so it's like, why take pride in that?

It's a little freaky though. What were the odds of a coworker winning the lottery vs. a coworker coming in and shooting up people with a semi-automatic rifle? (I hope I got the name right to avoid pissing at least 5 people off)

I have a feeling the latter is more likely.

Yellow isn't exactly wrong either. A quick Google search suggest about 70% of Lottery winners go bankrupt. Regardless of how much money some folks have or earn, some folks are smart about their money, some are not.

Pretty much. A couple million isn't actually that much. You can invest it and live quite comfortably off of a 3-5% return, but if he's the sort of person who spends $20 a day on the lottery and quit his job the instant he won, I'm guessing smart investment for a frugal-yet-comfortable life isn't at the top of the list of things he plans to do with the money. I'd expect quite a few big purchases before he gets to the idea of investing it, by which point that capital's going to be much, much lower.

Revelation34 posted...

Ehh, that's debatable. Real estate as an investment is pretty risky, and the higher your property value goes, the higher your property taxes go. Buying an expensive house when the guy doesn't have any income outside of investments might not be the best idea.

There's literally zero proof to support that claim. Just because you hear every now and then about someone ending up in bankruptcy after winning the lottery or getting a lot of money overnight in shit like TMZ and stuff doesn't mean it happens to "most" of the winners.
