why do so many white people feel the need to ask this question. does it matter? why look at me thru the lens of race? and like what conversation could possibly spring from this question? I think it's gone along these lines every single time:

"So what are you?"
"egyptian"
"Wait really?"
"yeah"
"No you're not"
"yeah i am"
"That's so cool"
"thanks i guess"
"So do you like speak Egyptian?"

like what do you want from me? it's not even like they just wanted to talk about heritage, if i return the question they just go like "yeah im half irish half german half swedish or whatever idk haha lol" and brush it off. im not a fuckin animal at the zoo mate.

I used to get that when I was younger but I guess as people got older they switched to "where are you from" which I guess they think is less racist???

Anyways I always take it as an opportunity to pinch their white guilt nerve. Or even better, their white must-always-appear-socially-acceptable-and-fit-in nerve.

I usually follow up with "what do you mean" so they have this feeling that I am offended, and they always make the same BRILLIANT, BULLETPROOF clarification "where were you born". To which I can gladly say Virginia and watch them totally dismantle, forced to either accept the least satisfying answer possible, or reveal their dumbass biases by continuing to press for more info.

agreed

tbh, asking about race isn't inherently a bad thing

it's just the dehumanizing way in which these questions are phrased

"what are you" is clearly dehumanizing and "where are you from" means a different thing to white americans

"what is your race/ethnicity" can feel more callous to people's white guilt, but it's straightforward with its intent, which is strictly better

i dont think white people understand how it feels to be on the receiving end of questions like that. if you want to have a conversation about my culture and its influences on me or my upbringing or something, im open to that. its just so far removed from an actual conversation when its structured as "what are you?" "wow thats weird"

This happens everywhere, like if a white person lives in an Asian country they get the same question. Whichever race is the majority are often curious when they see someone who's different.

I don't get why people get offended by this. People ask where other people are from all the time, whether it's a city, state, or country. Like white people ask each other where they're from too, and also what their ancestry is. But when it's a white person asking a minority it's suddenly horrible and racist.

Yeah I've had people follow up with "what's your ethnicity" when I ask "what do you mean" and that's fine and they get the answer they want.

I've also had brown people really press my origins trying to evoke some sort of nationalist pride or something, and that is FAR worse than what meek white people do.
