Obviously Nintendo is a bunch of e rated *******, so it would never happen, but I'm curious to think about how this game would pan out considering the nightmarish reality of living in a Pokemon world. It could also take place in Lt Surge's prime during the Pokewar, that idea has potential.

probably not that well. also, it will hurt the branding that pokemon is a family game. (even it's all about illegal animal fighting.)

Even if it sold well, it would absolutely probably reek of forced edginess and it would be remembered as Nintendo's Shadow the Hedgehog

They've put out several T-rated games.

Most likely. "I want an M-rated installment in this typically E-rated series" is almost invariably coming from angsty teenagers that want to appear very grown-up.

There's nothing wrong with E-rated games. There's nothing wrong with Pokmon games being E-rated.

Being rated M doesn't mean gory violence, it could mean nudity and sex, and a plot that isn't stupid.

Lots if m-rated games have dumb plots

And Nudity? What do you want? The player character coming home and accidentally watching their mom get plowed by the evil team leader and the region professor? Or one of the gym leaders treating you to a really awkward and long sex scene after you win?

When I was, like, 13, a big part of my entertainment on YouTube was watching Pokmon hacks where characters said "fuck" all the time, and the daycares were always full of wailords and skittys with the little children NPCs just behind the fence, looking and commenting on it

Meaning the plot doesn't have to be restricted by Nintendo's desire to make it kid friendly. Stories can be good or bad regardless, but without restrictions a story would not have to be edited or designed to specifically suit a rating.

I meant this mainly as a joke since Nintendo is so aggressively kid friendly but I wouldn't complain.

It would sell extremely poorly since it'd lose the bottom half of its fanbase, fail to attract a significant number of new fans, and likely alienate even die-hard fans.

As for the idea of Pokemon warfare, there already *was* a strategy game along those lines -- Pokemon Conquest -- which didn't do that well. The concept also appeared in some terrible story arcs of the Pokemon manga and using Pokemon for warfare was alluded to in XY as a big thing.

It's also worth noting that the Pokemon designs generally don't lend themselves to that kind of content. Pokemon designs tend to be cute whereas a serious game would likely need more menacing monsters (granted, many of the dark and ghost types are fine as-is; and the concept of Mimikyu was surprisingly grim for a Pokemon game).

And, in general, while I've sometimes thought it'd be cool to have a Pokemon clone with a slightly more in-depth story and a different setting, I'm not sure that the concept lends itself that well to the idea.

Pretty sure it's not the rating that limits Pokemon's plots so much as the basic premise not exactly lending itself to deep, compelling stories.

Literally the Shin Megami Tensei series, although it did the collectible fighting Monster thing before Pokemon.

Vaguely heard of it, but never played it. I thought the actual player characters also fought in those games with a kind of party system, though, which are kind of a dime a dozen compared to games with Pokemon's format. Is the collectible side of things really that big in SMT? Such as doing something akin to filling a Pokedex?

That game was all kinds of disappointing despite (or because?) of the darker tone. Granted, half the problem was how slow everything ran.

It was dark-lite, so it failed to present a decent story and since it had virtually no pokemon and was a corridor simulator, there was nothing to get it off the ground.

Yeah the main character fights alongside the monsters.

And sort of for the collecting part, there is a Compiendium which you can register monters too and can pay currency to summon them at whatever level you regeistered them at. But the biggest part that encouragez the collecting is that you"re supposed to fuse monsters to gether to create a new one with the same skills as the ones you fused.

Its' a fantastic game series I very highly reccomend.

Also sorry for the shit spelling, I'm on my phone right now.
