And, in general, while I've sometimes thought it'd be cool to have a Pokemon clone with a slightly more in-depth story and a different setting, I'm not sure that the concept lends itself that well to the idea.


Literally the Shin Megami Tensei series, although it did the collectible fighting Monster thing before Pokemon.


Vaguely heard of it, but never played it. I thought the actual player characters also fought in those games with a kind of party system, though, which are kind of a dime a dozen compared to games with Pokemon's format. Is the collectible side of things really that big in SMT? Such as doing something akin to filling a Pokedex?


Yeah the main character fights alongside the monsters.

And sort of for the collecting part, there is a Compiendium which you can register monters too and can pay currency to summon them at whatever level you regeistered them at. But the biggest part that encouragez the collecting is that you"re supposed to fuse monsters to gether to create a new one with the same skills as the ones you fused.

Its' a fantastic game series I very highly reccomend.
