Do you think this scene should just be removed?

Call Of Duty: WW2 is set to be released on November 3rd but an apparent RAPE SCENE had to be altered by Activision after there was outrage that the scene was included as Australia has demanded it be changed...but all they did was change the female victim's outfit from a skirt to PANTS!!

The game centres around the Nazi takeover of Europe and violent nature of the German death camps but one particular scene of a female spy being raped by a Nazi soldier has caused controversy as the player is given an OPTION in that scene on what to do during that scene to the Nazi..

While at no point is the actual sexual assault is witnessed by the player, the implications are so obvious that Activision had to alter the scene before resubmitting the game to the Classification Board for review..

With these new changes, it's able to keep a rating of 18+ for "high impact violence and online interactivity"

The altering received mixed reviews about whether the changes were warranted as one person said the game was for adults and not for kids so it was "unfair" while another person said this use of sexual violence to evoke an emotional response in video games is lazy, exploitative and disrespectful.

Do you think this scene should be removed?

There is rape in all other forms of media, why is there being rape in a video game any different?

The interactive element is a pretty major reason to raise eyebrows, if it's the player doing the raping. The same thing's been said about violence, but at least with violence you've got a fun action element going on. With an interactive rape scene, the only way anyone's going to be getting enjoyment out of it is if they enjoy the idea of raping somebody, since you aren't really going to be able to attach any sort of gameplay to it that couldn't be done any other way. That's definitely not a good thing, so keeping that stuff away from minors makes sense.

When the player isn't doing the raping, though, it is indeed no different. I fully expect that, in the case of CoD, it's just being thrown in for shock value and to generate buzz for the game, rather than for any particularly deep or thought-provoking story reasons, but criticizing directors for using sexual violence for easy shock value is something that applies equally to any medium.

Not at all. I'm all for video games telling the story they want to tell. Much like with movies. Murder, rape, slavery and many other terrible things should be allowed in media if the story calls for it.

Not only that but the games are rated 18 over here in the UK meaning only adults should be playing it and I believe adults are capable of making their own choices as to what media they consume.

A slight problem- the game passed through the ACB with an R18+ (High impact violence and threat of sexual violence, online interactivity) rating in its original, unedited form. The resubmission retained the R18+ rating, but lost the "threat of sexual violence" note.

It does seem strange that they'd be forced to change a rape that happens off-screen. I thought it would be like you, the player, raping someone in the game, as opposed to something you don't control that happens off-screen.

Let's be honest here: CoD is a children's game. The primary demographic is not mature adults, whatever the rating might say.

Little of that, little of game store employees just not caring about M ratings, the bottom line is that kids are still a major chunk of the game's demographic, and Activision knows that (and integrates that into their marketing). Throwing this kind of content in for no particular reason is kind of questionable when you take that into account, but then this kind of content is always kind of questionable when there's no particular reason for it.
