It's an office gig of some kind. They haven't hammered down the details yet. But it's for a locally owned company that sells buckets for grain elevators. Buckets that scoop up grain. Riveting stuff I'm sure. But the money is p nice.

It was probably extremely bad. I don't want to turn it on to look through the entire stats but I had Snorlax, Mr. Mime, Weepinbell, Pidgeot, Golduck and Articuno. I accidentally defeated the Moltres and it was too far from a save that I didn't want to reload, and I don't know where any of the other legendaries are. It was kind of weird going to the Elite Four and most of the Pokemon were like 15 levels above me but it still only took me a couple tries because this game is easy

Pidgeot - an all time classic. Every kid in America had a Pidgeot on their team for RBY
Snorlax - good pokemon, cool and kind of obscure choice
Mr. Mime - Bold refreshing choice. Interesting that you were able to catch an abra and then trade it, and use it throughout the game. I like it.
Weepinbeel - lol you didn't even bother to evolve it? solid pokemon though
Golduck - solid. the water + confusion is a good combo
Articuno - that effing cave is such a pain in the ass

I think you posted about this before, but what happened to your starter?

I didn't know Snorlax was an odd choice, though AFAIK you only get two chances to catch one in the game. I just love how useful Rest is, and it can learn almost anything. Snorlax and Articuno were pretty much the only two who actually did anything against the Elite Four.

It seems like so many things are weak to Confusion, and Mr. Mime gets boosted EXP, so I rolled with him.

Weepinbell is a middle evolve at least. I don't know why it didn't get to Victreebell. I just let the evolutions happen on their own.

My starter was Charmander. I used it through most of the game and it evolved to Charizard, but it seems like you face a lot of water Pokemon that leave it vulnerable. I also don't really know what is weak against fire - plant I guess, but the Elite Four doesn't use plants. Also ice (I think) but that weakness goes both ways.

Snorlax isn't really an odd choice. Really good pokemon and like you said rest is really good (especially with the poke flute) but I just never used him. and especially in the first gen, normal is a really good type. Psychic is also OP as heck

For weepinbell, you gotta use a leaf stone dawg.

you're supposed to roll with your starter the whole game, but I think it's cool that you didn't. Charmander is definitely the hardest starter to roll with, but there aren't many good fire types

Snorlax is a friggin beast in the first couple games. Then they nerfed him hard. Mr. Mime is a badass pick though.

I did roll with Charwhatever for more or less the whole game, but there are so many times when it's not that useful, if not an outright liability. Like you said, normal and psychic types are really good and I find them more universally useful, so it eventually got hard to keep Charizard's level near theirs. Also, I couldn't get past the first trainer in the Elite Four my first try, and she uses a bunch of ice and water types so I just took out Charizard for the second try and ended up beating all of them

I respect chewy for beating a game he doesn't like just to say he beat it. I wish I had that kind of motivation for Metroid or Castlevania games so I can say I beat them and also maybe see why people like them so much, but I always quit so quickly.

I normally don't watch that channel either. They judged all of the characters in the game on first impressions and didn't take the time to do a lot of optional conversations or even look around the environment. They never saw certain characters develop because they chose "bad" options and were like "We're fine, let's just continue".

That's weird. I guess I can understand that if it's your first foray into that type of low action game that you wouldn't necessarily think it necessary to do optional stuff, but you've got the dang rewind option! You might as well play with it. I'm guessing they hated your girl Chloe?

I wouldn't say I necessarily didn't like it. I just don't have a lot of familiarity with RPGs so I was afraid I wouldn't "get" it. It turned out to be easy enough that it doesn't really matter. I still kind of think it has too many different options, especially since so many of them are useless and you only catch most things for your Pokedex, though I know that variety opens up a lot of replay value with different runs.

All the Pokemon are also part of the charm of the game, too. It's not really that great as an actual game, but it has so much charm and personality. It's a much cooler universe than most other Nintendo franchises. And when you think about what most Game Boy games are like, the sheer volume of different sprites/animations and sound effects is very ambitious and impressive. This isn't going to find a place on my all-time list, but I'd say it's worthy of being called a classic.

(all this isn't really a direct response to Ultima, but I decided to take the opportunity to write a little mini-review of the game)

imagine experiencing that as a 6 year old. Pokemon literally changed my life

And the franchise has managed to stay alive by putting out continually solid games, with a decent metagame with each generation. My junior year of high school., i was actually kind of a hardcore pokemon battler and it was lots of fun

I really had a great time replaying Blue recently, warts and all. The only thing I can really say against it is the menus are horrible and movement speed is really bad (this is mitigated on an emulator obv) but even so it was still a lot of fun to play again. I was playing through Silver recently but dropped it just because so many good games are coming out, but that's really good too. It's technically much much more impressive than Red/Blue but for me just isn't quite as charming. I love them all in varying amounts though.

Pokemon was huge around me as a kid but I don't remember anyone actually having the game. Maybe my experience is just an aberration, but I'm still convinced to this day that people think it was a much bigger game than it really is. I think what happened is the ones who actually played the game associate with that most strongly, and remember that was what was happening with the kids around them, but from what I remember it was really more about the anime, cards and toys.

This is how I feel about the new games. The simplicity was fine back on Game Boy when there was nothing but shitty 2D platformers, and the game length was great for a game back then. Nowadays I think other RPGs have more complexity and a better story to draw me in, but I don't think the new Pokemon games are bad; they're just not for me anymore.

this is honestly my experience with LoZ/OoT. obv my own personal opinon, but still.

Also worth nothing, the anime, cards, and toys were a result of the gameboy game. It was literally that huge of a thing.

Another one of my opinions. I think G/S/C is the best generation of pokemon games and is such a huge leap from BRY.

Everyone in my elementary school was playing Pokemon games and then collecting the cards. I remember sitting at the lunch table and seeing 15 or so kids all playing gameboys and giving out helpful tips and passing along false rumors that other kids had told them. It was a big deal in my area. I wasn't going to get the game at first but all the cool kids were playing it so I had to. And I'm glad I did.

edit: Wanted to add that the pre-internet days made a large-scale game like this really fun.

If you feel that way about OoT then maybe you and I both were just in a weird place for each respective game. I knew a kid who got his parents to call him sick so he could play OoT. Everyone was talking about it, people would show each other when they got to adult Link because it seemed so huge, stuff like that.

I know everything came from the game originally, but at a certain point it became so ubiquitous that there was no avoiding some form of Pokemon. I don't even know what got me into it but I'm 99% sure it wasn't the game. Some of that stuff probably reciprocated interest back into the game. I'm sure the game did a lot of that on its own, but it was certainly helped by being more marketable for toys and TV than other video games were.

I think after a while I got jealous of the people who did get to play the game. That seemed interesting to me as I felt like I started to outgrow all the other Pokemon stuff. My sister had a Game Boy and she let me play it a little bit but it's not like I could do much since I didn't want to overwrite her save. Plus at that age when I saw stuff like how expensive the bike was I assumed that I'd have no hope of getting it and that the game would be pretty much unplayable without it (only the latter part turned out to be true)
