Say, by your doctor, an example being asked to quit red meat.

Would you do it? or continue against the advice? or get another opinion from someone like Dr. Nick from the Simpsons?

Probably, but it depends on the animal. I could forgo eating quail meat tomorrow, for instance.

Oh, good point. I suppose it'd very easy for me to give up quail, compared to chicken.

Giving up pig meat wouldn't be so bad. I mean, sure, it means no bacon, and that's awful, but I hate pork chops and ham is only so-so.

I could do it easily if it's a meat I don't care for or that I rarely eat.

Otherwise, unless the meat had become deathly toxic to me, the best I could do is lessen my intake of it.

I could reduce my consumption but not cut it out of my diet entirely if it were something g like pork, beef or chicken which are the main meats in my diet. Unless I somehow suddenly developed serious food allergy. That would be a different story. I'd have to stop eating it.

I can't think of any animal that I absolutely couldn't stand giving up. Chicken would be pretty hard, as I eat that quite a bit, but not to the point where I couldn't make arrangements. Beef and pork I would miss, but I don't eat those all that often.

Unless we're counting in animal by-products, that is - I love me some cheese and it's just not the same if it doesn't come from a cow. If I was told I couldn't have anything cow-related, that would definitely suck and I'd have to make some major changes to my diet.

If my doctor told me I would die unless I switch to to a vegan diet, Id be vegan from that moment forward. Same goes for vegetables, though. If the same situation occurred but the doc told me to eliminate a bunch of vegetables, Id stop eating those vegetables.

I love food, including meat, but not enough to die for it.

I kinda have already. I'll still eat beef when BBQing or at a nice steak restaurant but outside of this I try to reduce my meat intake to just chicken or pork. I have also started choosing beans and tofu if I want to spend less as well.

At almost 34 years old my health isn't exactly perfect and I could stand to lose 20-30 lbs. I don't want to end up like my mom, aunts, uncles, and a few cousins who have to rely on cholesterol or diabetes pills.

If I was asked to go back to eating meat that would be a different story but I'd consider it if medically necessary.

I'd go to a different doctor in that case.

My answer was under the assumption that Id been thoroughly checked out, including getting a second opinion (from a good doctor, not a Dr Nick type).

Of course Id get a second opinion, but if the second doctor backed up the first, then Id stop eating meat.

For a second opinion or just because you disagree with his/her assessment? Some recommendations might sound extreme but I'd imagine in those cases is when you seek a second or even third opinion.

You act as if supporters of both are one and the same. It should be obvious but a country this big is bound to have multiple opinions from different point-of-views.

Oh okay, fair enough. I can see myself switching to a vegetarian diet and the associated health benefits if my doctor(s) recommends it but it'll be a hard sell if they suggest a vegan diet. I'll have to become heavily lactose intolerant or something to stop consuming milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.

tbh, I forwent red meats for a few months for health reasons. Eventually caved since beef is the king of meats.

Beef and chicken are hard to go without. A lot of other meats I don't care about as much, then there are plenty of obscure meats I could give up without much issue. And, depending on your definition of meat, apparently fish isn't even considered meat.

Ethically, fish is meat.

Nutritionally, they're pretty different. To live healthy, people are supposed to eat mammals/birds in limited quantities only, and can live completely without them. Meanwhile, fish can be eaten every day, and should be eaten about two times a week (vegetarians/vegans and allergic people expected).

No not ethically. Literally. Definition of meat in English:

meat
noun
mass noun

1The flesh of an animal, typically a mammal or bird, as food (the flesh of domestic fowls is sometimes distinguished as poultry)
pieces of meat

Also no. Maybe 500 years ago when mercury poisoning wasn't a thing.

Well, technically no. There's a long history of breaking the two up for some reason, and it's not just fake-vegetarians. To this day, you still articles comparing meat and fish despite the fact that intuitively you'd think they'd belong in the same category.

Not that I subscribe to the view myself, mind you. I'm just acknowledging the prevalence of the belief.

My wife and I went vegan 2 months ago and have noticed a huge gain in our energy levels. Disclaimer: I love the taste of meat.

At first, I considered it to be a mentality thing influencing it; like, "duh if you're excited, you'll feel more energized" but that wasn't the case for either of us.

I've noticed huge differences at the gym, in my skin (not as oily throughout the day), less stomach aches, quicker bathroom trips, and my exercise induced asthma went from "hardly noticeable" over long distances to "nonexistent" over any distance.

We haven't just gone vegan, we quit eating GMOs and processed foods. We have a juicing machine and use that throughout the week, too, so that might have a huge part in what I've noticed. Never going back to junk food, meat, and/or dairy. Body feels super cleansed all the time now that I've stopped.
