set it so that it rains about 1/6th of the time, and the global daily conversation seed matches the weather

for context; the way the NPCs work in this game they are basically just objects with the appearance of character X whose only line of code is to summon script X. script X then executes based on a bunch of variables to determine what they say based on the global daily conversation seed, your relationship with that person, etc. etc. essentially I wanted to devise a system where the NPCs can freely wander around the map but your relationship with that NPC and the way they will speak to you will always persist no matter where or when you run into them -- and under certain circumstances (like if it's raining) they'll comment on the weather.

added three new maps today (two city maps and the library interior) as well as setting up the skeleton/framework for one of the skill systems in the game. specifically, the library itself. the library in the game is owned by a rich, eccentric asshole so you have to pay a fee to get inside each day. once inside you can spend the day study a specific subject you wish. each subject has its own counter (like say Alchemy will be 0/30 to start) and you gain points toward the goal each day based on your intelligence stat. reading books each day will also increase your intelligence over time so you'll get better at learning new skills from the library. once you get the counter to the required value, you'll learn that skill. I'm also planning to have tiers for some of these skills, maybe all of them. so once you've read enough to master Alchemy 1, you could continue reading and boost it to Alchemy 2 (for like a bigger passive bonus or something along those lines)

the only thing is that I want to make sure that the player can somehow make money each day using only their intelligence. specifically because I like the idea of the player having more freedom. and basically forcing them to go out and do adventure things just to be able to pay to use the library feels very restrictive. if there's a way they can go around town doing "smart" things and getting paid for it, and use that money to access the library, that feels more like player choice is a thing.

also spent a bit of time just now filling in some of the skeleton of the library and the skill system. got it so you can set which subject you're studying (from 3 current subjects) and it tracks your progress toward learning that subject. each day you come back you'll make more progress. once you have enough, you gain the knowledge. made it so the Botany skill actually does something, but none of the others do yet.

also started tracking the experience of the intelligence stat and added the code where it will actually increase once you have enough exp (I'll do this individually for each stat once I've added things they can do in the game, rather than doing them all at once up front. this is just a matter of spreading my effort around so I don't feel like it's a chore to do a bunch of similar scripts all at once)

added a labor master in town. you can go see him to get paid for helping with the building project for Blight refugees. the amount of time that the job takes depends on your strength score, and of course you get strength related growth for completing jobs (in addition to being paid). but it is limited to once per day and you can't start working after it gets too late in the day. basically prevents the system from being abused, but if you are very strong you can go there early in the morning, work a short day, get paid a full wage, and then still have the rest of the day to do stuff. I may have it drain 1 point of Energy depending on how the balance of the game turns out, but I likely won't be doing this until after I get feedback on the demo. specifically, I want to see if that 1 point of Energy ends up really making a difference that often.

well this is pretty exciting. I got my first "outside of the city" map done and just finished scripting a pretty neat mechanic. there's basically a 'controller' event that spawns as soon as you enter the map. the controller then randomly determines a bunch of variables and then uses those to assign X and Y coordinates to various objects within specified ranges. right now I've only added one object, the Kartia Herb, and a second object which basically just makes little sparkles appear around it (so it'll be noticeable to the player). basically every time you enter the map there will be a Kartia Herb, but each time it will be in a different randomly placed location. and each time it will be within the same area of the map (it's always in this one specified range in the north west part of the map near this log, but never in exactly the same square).

sort of faux procedural generation. but using this idea I can probably do more clever things later on. might work on adding some more objects tonight but I wanted to post about the first one after completing it because I tested it, it does work, and it is kinda exciting for me. I haven't created this type of event before although I've toyed around with ideas on how to make it work in the past.

by "it works" I mean that when the controller event runs it does sucessfully generate two random variables, moves the Kartia Herb to that X,Y and also moves the sparkles on top of the Kartia Herb. when you examine the herb you get the item and the herb and the sparkles both go away. and if I reset the controller and run it again it spawns the herb in a different spot.

interestingly I can probably add monsters and other things to the map using this same basic idea. for example I could create a hole which randomly spawns in a differing location, and this hole is used as an entrance to an underground cave/dungeon area. one thing I did in my previous game was had a rotating selection of different maps for dungeon areas so I could do the same thing here to increase the illusion of variety even further; when you exit the city walls you have to go and find a uniquely spawned cave entrance which might lead you to different cave maps depending on the day.

been working on some code for my battle system and the first enemy you'll see in the game. haven't got much to say in the way of "updates" because this is going to take a bit of work. but once I finish the template I'll be able to make future enemies with very little effort; simply changing the variables for their attack, defense, etc. ratings when you make contact with them and then running the same generic 'enemy' script.

transition issue fixed. I also took the opportunity to rebuild the transition event and streamline it greatly so that it can be replicated with roughly 1/10 of the effort as what I was doing before. based on my estimates this will save me roughly 15 hours of work over the course of 100 maps.

on that note I have finished programming the "battle" system

although it's more similar to Ys I than anything else, but it actually checks what weapon you're holding and compares that to the enemy threat level while drawing an attack level from your own stats. essentially you run into an enemy and kill them or you bounce off and take damage.

got the first spell working as well. spells have very high attack values but drain energy, and if you have a spell equipped and your energy is too low to cast it you'll always bounce off and fail when you get close (even worse than fighting unarmed)
